Last week at Sadler's Wells East, we successfully completed our tour of We Caliban.

"Any dialogue forged with William Shakespeare was bound to be stimulating and turbulent, and We Caliban, inspired by The Tempest, was no exception. Our sideways look at this remarkable play landed on the rebellious Caliban and his untold story.

A massive thank you to all who were part of the journey which started in December 2024 and kept us on our toes till curtain down on the 23rd of April 2026. We could not have done it without the creativity and dedication of all the brilliant people who gave so generously of their time and talents. A special shout-out to our audience who honoured us with their concentration and warm applause." - Shobana Jeyasingh, Artistic Director

"My grandparents in Sri Lanka and India were very much products of colonial history.

They went to schools run by the British, learnt English, changed their clothing habits and adapted to another culture. My parents’ immense admiration for the English education system funded my travel to the UK to be a student of English Literature.

European empire building changed the fortunes of my forefathers as it did Caliban’s." - Artistic Director Shobaba Jeyasingh Dance, interview with A Youngish Perspective

This experience was part of Shobana Jeyasingh's reason to look at The Tempest from the POV of the colonised, Caliban, and to create her latest dance piece, We Caliban.

"It is the characters and their dynamics with each other that make We Caliban a thought-provoking and even an uncomfortable work, willing to engage in challenging contemporary conversations around colonialism and agency.” – Dive(rse) Dance

"Certain versions of the past - they're not the only versions of the past" - Artistic Director, Shobana Jeyasingh

We Caliban re-examines Shakespeare's The Tempest's themes of history and power, observing whose voices are heard and whose are silenced.

Telling Caliban’s story in the present tense challenges us to confront colonial legacies, prejudice, and control, and to reflect on how these forces still shape our world today.
