Staging Schiele scrutinises the eternal conundrum of the male artist and the female model.

Four dancers inhabit Schiele’s highly-charged world of colour, masterful lines and unusual perspectives, a world that puts the human body on visceral display. Shobana’s award-winning choreography matches the intensity of Schiele, engaging with his anxieties as well as his supreme self-confidence.

The work captures the artist’s own self-conscious framing of himself and his work. Both intimate and formal, it throws light on his brief meteoric rise to fame.

In TooMortal, bodies appear, disappear and re-emerge through the space around them, creating a shifting sense of presence, memory and perception.

Movement and architecture are in dialogue, coming together to create a shifting and dynamic visual language.

Here, Shobana Jeyasingh brought dance into spaces embedded with ritual, reforming them into stages of physical embodiment.

STORIES IN DANCE: BAYADÈRE – THE NINTH LIFE

Bayadère - The Ninth Life looks beyond the familiar ballet to question the history and fantasies that shaped its portrayal of the Indian temple dancer.

Drawing on the real encounters between Indian dancers and European audiences in the 19th century, Shobana Jeyasingh reimagines the story through a contemporary lens - bringing together history, poetry, dance and a critique of the Western gaze.

The transformation continues in Gabriel Prokofiev score, which takes material from Ludwig Minkus’s original La Bayadère music and manipulates, distorts and reworks it into something new.

STORIES IN DANCE: CONTAGION

Contagion explores the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. Inspired by the rapid mutation, unpredictability and adaptability of a virus, Shobana Jeyasingh transforms the invisible processes of nature into movement.

Eight dancers contort, mutate and reorganise across a landscape of white blocks, their bodies becoming a visual language for both the vulnerability and resilience of the human body.

STORIES IN DANCE: STRANGE BLOOMS

Inspired by plant structures and cellular processes, Shobana’s choreography imagines bodies as constantly changing forms.

Composer Gabriel Prokofiev approached the score in a similar spirit, taking Louis Couperin’s 17th-century Chaconne La Complaignante as his starting point and transforming the harpsichord recording through electroacoustic techniques.

The result is a work where Baroque music, electronic sound and movement become part of the same process of growth, disruption and renewal found in nature.

Thierry Pécou’s symphonic suite, WE CALIBAN, is out now.

“Starting from this work I started to serve choreography, I wanted to make an album, a kind of “symphonic suite” capturing the main moments of the show, as well as many sketches that were part of the process of developing the creation, but aren’t left behind in the scenic version. The album brings a kind of parallel narrative with its own drama, as a second way to tell this story. It’s a stand-alone piece to listen to, the production of which is completely M.A.O. seems to be unique to me.”

Shobana Jeyasingh Dance marks the passing of choreographer Sir Richard Alston with profound sadness. He was a warm hearted and supportive colleague. He choreographed Delicious Arbour for us and it was a privilege to see the ease, grace and eloquence of his creativity up close in the studio. It was always a treat to bump into his warm smile at The Place cafe and share a sense of collegiate camaraderie - a rare quality in the world of dance. There is so much to celebrate and so much to be missed in the life and passing of Richard Alston.

STORIES IN DANCE: FAULTLINE

For many British South Asian men, the landscape of Britain after the 7/7 London bombings were a time of uncertainty and existential fear. It was this atmosphere that Shobana reflected in Faultline, an intense and unsettling reflection of their lived experience.

Shobana worked with artist Pete Gomes () in creating a film that accompanied the piece and was crucial to the choreographic process.

Filmed on Super 8 in Brick Lane and Southall using street cast performers, the rushes were then brought into the rehearsal room, informing Shobana and the dancers’ exploration of movement and character.

Gomes’ film remains an intense and striking document of early 21st Century British society.
