Andy Warhol once lived with 25 cats, all named Sam?

Before becoming one of the defining figures of Pop Art, Warhol lived with his mother, Julia, in New York during the 1950s. In their apartment on East 57th Street, they first had a cat named Hester, who was said to be lonely.

To keep her company, Warhol and Julia began adding more cats to the household, eventually creating a colony of 25 cats, all famously named Sam.

This unusual feline family inspired one of Warhol’s earliest self-published books, ‘25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy’, created in 1954. Tender, playful and deeply personal, the project offers a glimpse into Warhol’s life before fame, while already revealing his fascination with repetition, seriality and everyday subjects.

Ron Arad Awarded CBE in 2026 King’s Birthday Honours.

Among the distinguished figures recognised in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours List is Ron Arad, who was awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to art and design. The honour recognises a career spanning more than four decades, during which Arad has continually challenged the boundaries between art, architecture, design and technology.

Arad has maintained a longstanding relationship with Opera Gallery through a series of exhibitions across our international network. Recent presentations include solo exhibitions in Geneva, New York, and Monaco, showcasing both iconic works and new experimental pieces in crystalline resin, while highlighting his ongoing exploration of materiality and form. In 2023, Arad’s work was chosen to inaugurate Opera Gallery’s flagship London space on New Bond Street, underscoring his importance within the gallery’s programme.

Now open at the Palais des Arts et du Festival in Dinard, ‘Jean Dubuffet. La houle du virtuel (1962–1974)’ explores L’Hourloupe, one of the most emblematic cycles in Jean Dubuffet’s oeuvre. Organised in close collaboration with the Fondation Dubuffet, the exhibition brings together over one hundred works, including exceptional loans from the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the Musée de Grenoble and Opera Gallery.

From paintings and drawings to sculptures, architectural environments and the performative world of Coucou Bazar, the exhibition reveals how Dubuffet expanded his distinctive visual language into an immersive universe where art, space and performance meet. On view until 20 September 2026.

In Keith Haring’s work, the red heart appears as one of his most powerful and instantly recognisable symbols.

In ‘The Lovers’, 1987, two of Haring’s iconic figures come together beneath a radiant red heart, a universal emblem of love, unity and connection.

For Haring, love was not limited by gender, class, race or sexual orientation. His genderless figures remind us that love is something to be shared freely, equally and without boundaries.

Simple, joyful and deeply human, ‘The Lovers’ captures the spirit of Haring’s art: bold, direct and full of hope.

In ‘Passing/Posing, Jean de Carondelet’, 2004, Kehinde Wiley brings Renaissance portraiture into the present day.

‘Portraits are about revealing aspects of an individual,’ says Wiley. Here, the sitter’s pose and hand gesture reference a historic portrait of Jean de Carondelet, a powerful Burgundian statesman and advisor to Holy Roman Emperor Charles V.

Wiley places a contemporary figure within a tradition once reserved for power and status, ‘allowing us to look at people that are often invisible in a different light.’

Currently on view at Opera Gallery Houston.
