Hid-In - insulin pump accessories Accessories designed for people living with Type 1 diabetes who wear insulin pumps Hello. Prior to the move I transitioned from insulin pens to pump therapy.

My name is Katie Isherwood and at 22 I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. I was about to start my final year of Fashion Design at Central St Martins, London. On top of creating my final catwalk collection I had to learn to manage my diabetes.

14 years later I was a lingerie designer living in Hong Kong and working for a large manufacturer. My career had taken me around the world, combining diabetes management with an active work and social life. It was tricky at times but I learned to fit diabetes around the life I chose. Over the years my insulin pump and I travelled the world. We've been to desert islands and skied down mountains together. We've been to interviews, yoga classes, wedding banquets, first dates and dance classes. And when I couldn't find pump accessories to fit the outfit or occasion, which was often the case, I made and customised my own, from Body Bands to Pocket Pants. Informed by my underwear design and development experience, and made from cutting edge fabrics I sourced in the Far East, these hand made accessories helped me to comfortably conceal and carry my pump. They lifted some of the anxiety of wearing and accessing my pump in public and so gave me back my confidence and freedom. They also opened my wardrobe back up again. And if they helped me perhaps they could help others? Pump therapy is an incredibly effective way to manage Type 1 diabetes, and after exploring the market for several years I knew first hand that there was a need for products that made these devices easier to wear. And so Hid-In was born.

Taking Type 1 on Holiday.

There are many things that make living with Type 1 a little easier; pumps, sensors, Jellybabies… great accessories : )
However, after 27 years, I can confirm that there are FEW/ NO things in life that BEING Type 1 makes easier.
Holidays are at the top of that list.
There are always extra things to consider, more things to forget, more unknowns, more drama.

The smiles are real, but they should come with Type 1 sub-headings…

Free Body Band Demo Packs

One of the questions I see most often from those starting pump therapy is:
“Where do I put my pump?”

Having great pump accessories on hand to demonstrate some answers to this question can really helps to reassure wearers and encourage the transition to pump therapy.

I am happy to support DSNs, Nurses, Educators, Pump Reps and Advocates, Type 1 groups and organisations by sending out samples to help to demonstrate effective, attractive, discrete and versatile solutions to this important question.
For over 10 years I have researched and developed a wide range of popular, much loved products to suit everyone from babies to adults of all ages and occupations with special and individual needs. Created for pump wearers, by a pump wearer (and underwear designer!)
Hid-In accessories keep your pump safe and comfortable, integrate it into individual lifestyles and help it ‘disappear’ both physically and mentally. Also available in a range of Pick ’n’ Mix colours and prints to show it off, if you prefer. There’s something for everyone.

Please fill in this form and we will be delighted to send out a range of accessories, information and discounts to help you to show potential and existing pumpers some popular, well tried and tested ways to wear and access their pumps.

Your Feedback means so much to me.

I was away on a walking holiday having a tough time with Type 1 tripping me up at every turn when I received this message from overseas (they asked to stay anonymous) that totally lifted my spirits:

“Thank you for creating life changing belts for insulin pumps. I have sensory issues and many other brands have either non adjustable belt or are made from harsh materials. I was sceptical before arrival, but it is perfect. Sometimes I forget its there 🥲 At night I take belt from my body and put it next to me so when I go to toilet or get up I carry on my arm as a purse/ handbag 🤣 I will be recommending and definitely buying more”

I have often received messages that talk about how difficult pump starts can be for those with heightened senses, sometimes linked to ADHD and autism. The pump itself can be challenging enough with the shape, size, noise. These bands are very soft, smooth and light without fiddly fastening and noisy Velcro or hard buckles which many of us find uncomfortable. And adjusted to a snug fit they stop the pump from shifting and bouncing, helping it to disappear both physically and mentally.
I am so delighted and proud that these accessories make a difference to those of us living with Type 1

I am being shouted at by alarms, my insulins out, my pump battery low, my sensor change didn’t go to plan, my levels aren’t where they should be and I’m not enjoying the painful sites caused by switching insulin… I’m tired of the endless paraphernalia and the panic caused by the lack of it.
It is thankless, endless, and endlessly boring. I am tired of it

ParenT1ng
Being a mum living with Type 1, and being a parent to a child with Type 1 are very different positions.
I saw a post recently from a mum who spoke about being a parent to a Type 1 child being harder.
“Hear me out” she said.

I thought this was a bold, brave thing to say, but from her position, with, it turned out, many years experience as both, who am I to question?
And as a mum myself, it really got me thinking…

Then a couple of weeks ago I met the brilliant mum of a Type 1 daughter, no lived experience, no family history, and we talked.
About how she is the voice of Type 1 to her child. About the stress of calculating food at childrens parties.
About never having a break, delivering injections, inserting sensors, being the one to make your child cry. Trying to explain it’s for their own good. Being the face of Type 1, the person who restricts treats, the fun police, the one who does the waking, chasing, questioning.
We talked about T he guilt of a miscalculation and watching it affect the person you love the most, watching your child hypo from the insulin you calculated. We all understand the guilt of a higher than expected HBA1C, imagine your child’s name next to that when you’re the one managing their treatments..
Think how angry T1D makes us. Imagine being the parent on the front line of that anger.
I can only imagine how much more painful that would be.
Big respect to anyone managing their own diabetes, new found respect and admiration for those in charge of the highs and lows of a loved one…

Type 1 wins: Accidentally adaptive leggings!
Imagine my surprise today when I put on my new gympants to find a pocket that is the perfect size for my Tslim pump!
I LOVE that many sports and leisure brands are adding streamlined pockets into their leggings, running shorts and tops.
They’re meant for phones, keys, cards, change etc. but they work perfectly for all our tubed tech. What an exciting (small!) win!

Have you found an unexpected pockets to stash your pump?
Please share…

(These are Adidas Stella McCartney, a TKMaxx bargain at £9, bargain!)

I loved these today…
What will you choose?
