Ollie Spicer Hi, I’m Ollie, a Graphic Designer and Content Creator specialising in brand identity and Illustration. Hey!

I share tutorials, tips, and advice to help designers of all levels grow their skills, spark creativity, and elevate their work. I’m Ollie, a self-taught graphic designer and content creator based in London. I’ve spent the last decade getting hands-on in the design world, picking up new skills, learning the ins and outs, and growing as a designer along the way. In 2025, I decided to take a big step and start my own design studio, and it’s already been an incredible journey working with some fantastic clients. For me, design isn’t just about making stuff look good; it’s about getting to know the people I work with and building great relationships. I want to really understand your brand, your vision, and who you want to reach, so the work we create actually means something. I’ve done a bit of everything over the years, from logos and branding to digital content and marketing materials. No matter what I’m working on, I’m all about making sure the result not only looks awesome, but feels right for you and your goals. If you’re after someone genuinely excited to help you succeed, let’s chat and make something cool together!

Sip Syrup Branding – From Nature to Your Cup!
This has been one of the most rewarding branding projects I’ve had the pleasure of working on.
Sip Syrup was founded by the team behind Crwst, a small chain of coffee and brunch cafés in West Wales. With years of experience in the industry, they’ve always been passionate about delivering exceptional quality, whether it’s through ethically sourced beans or premium milk and alternatives.
However, one challenge they consistently faced was finding syrups that met their high standards. Most options on the market were loaded with preservatives and chemicals and came in cheap plastic packaging.
That frustration led the team to create their own range of premium syrups made from high-quality, natural ingredients and packaged in sustainable, recyclable aluminium.
When the team at Sip approached me, they were looking for help with branding the company and launching their first few syrup flavors. The goal was to break away from the outdated styles dominating the market and introduce a bold, modern identity that reflected the superior quality of their syrups.
For the brand design, we decided to make "Sip" the centrepiece of the logo, allowing the company to branch into other products in the future while maintaining strong brand recognition. I designed a custom "S" that can also function as a standalone icon, giving the brand versatility and a distinct visual identity.
Thank you, Sip Syrup, for the opportunity to work together, and I’m excited to see how you continue to make a mark on the industry!
What do you think of the branding? I always love to hear feedback 🙌

Who can relate? 😅
What the client sees 👀: The polished presentation and final concept.
What they don’t see ⏳: Hours upon hours of work, endless brainstorming, font dilemmas, colour experimentation, pixel-perfect alignment, multiple revisions, and countless sketches that never see the light of day.
There’s so much more that goes into creating a logo than meets the eye. That’s why it’s important to take a step back and appreciate the process. 🎨

Most brands stop at a mascot…

But on its own, that’s not really building a brand.

When I’m working on illustration-led identities, I’m not just thinking about a single character; I’m thinking about how that idea expands into a full design system.

How a mascot can be manipulated and repurposed into different variations, and how it can scale across packaging, social, and the wider brand.

Because that’s what creates consistency. And consistency is what makes a brand recognisable.

It’s the difference between something that just looks good and something that actually works long-term.

This is how I approach brand identity design, building out illustration systems, not just one-off visuals.

Here is how I turned a single Piaggio van into an unforgettable brand identity:

1. Roots Over Polish
"Bore Da" means "good morning" in Welsh. It wasn't a randomly brainstormed name; it was the exact phrase Guto, the founder, used to greet locals for years when working behind cafe bars. We built the brand foundation on community, good conversation, and the personal touch of one man driving around in a small Piaggio van.

2. The Secret Weapon (Meet Gus)
Instead of using standard coffee graphics, we anchored the visual identity around Guto’s beagle, Gus. And while a Beagle may not relate to coffee, it was a crucial part of Guto's story. So turning Gus into a dynamic, highly adaptable mascot gave the brand a visual heartbeat that could then be used across all visual communications.

3. Rejecting Bland Trends
We kept it raw, independent, and welcoming. By leaning into character instead of minimalist trends, we created something that feels deeply personal and instantly recognisable. And this is what builds support from the local community, where they want to see a homegrown, small independent business succeed.

When you give a brand a real human heartbeat, you stop competing on price & budgets, and start competing on loyalty.

Only keep the colour swatches you need 🙌
Here is a quick way to get rid of all those unused swatches that Adobe Illustrator adds to each project as default. Don't get me wrong, swatches are always useful, but when it comes to using the live paint tool, I like to only have the colours I require available to me so I can quickly navigate through each using the areow keys! Give it a try 🙌🙌

What is your favourite font? 👀
Have you ever heard of variable fonts? With variable fonts, the choice of exactly how heavy or slanted, or wide you want, your font is placed in the hands of the user, rather than having those decided for us by the type designer. This is so useful for when you want those in-between font weight sizes. Give them a try on your next project!! 🙌

Raise of hands who still uses the rectangle method? 👀
This isn't anything new in Illustrator, but hopefully, it's a good reminder the next time you try and align multiple shapes. For yearssss I would grab a rectangle and place them in between each shape just to get consistent spacing.
Then, I found out about aligning to key objects. It's really easy to use. Simply open the alignment panel, select all the shapes you want to align, then select 'align to key object'. From here, you can pick which shape you wish to use as the 'key' object, and then add the value you want to space each shape evenly by.
I hope this helps! Follow for more tips and tricks in Adobe Illustrator 🙌❤️
