One thing I’ve found after mixing hundreds of indie and folk records is that over polishing is the fastest way to strip out the emotion.

When a track is recorded with acoustic instruments, I think the character lives in those rough edges. Getting rid of room sounds, fret noise or over correcting a raw vocal take can flatten the whole feeling of a song.

A few things I like to focus on when mixing to maintain emotion:

- finding the rough around the edges parts and leaning into them rather than cleaning them up.
- ďťżďťżprotecting the midrange where the emotional weight lives, instead of pushing extreme highs and lows.
- ďťżďťżseating the vocal inside the instrumentation with reverbs and delays so it feels part of the space, rather than pushed aggressively forward.

Every time I finish a master I need to create a few different versions:

44.1kHz 16-bit
44.1kHz 24-bit
48kHz 24-bit
MP3 320kbps

It can be a very time consuming process, especially when dealing with an EP or album. So I built a macro to do it for me!

I select my master WAVs, press a button on my Stream Deck and it automatically creates all the deliverables for me. The actual audio conversion is done by FFmpeg, which is a really powerful open-source audio/video conversion tool.

The macro itself is basically just the automation layer that tells FFmpeg what to do. So there’s no processing or “mastering” happening here. Just sample rate conversion, bit depth conversion with dither where needed and MP3 encoding.

But I didn’t stop there!

Now for large projects, I’ve got somewhere in the region of 100 files sitting in one folder and I need to organise them. 4 versions of every song:

Main Mix, Instrumental, TV Mix and Acapella.

And 4 formats of each:

44.1kHz 16-bit WAV, 44.1kHz 24-bit WAV, 48kHz 24-bit WAV, MP3 320kbps

Instead of manually create and naming all the folders needed to organise the, I built a second Keyboard Maestro macro that does it for me.

I select all the files, hit one button and it reads the filenames, works out which song and version each file belongs to, creates the folders and puts everything in the right place.

It even turns my file naming convention like ‘YourSongName’ into a nice searchable folder name like ‘Your Song Name’.

This is the kind of automation I love. Just taking a repetitive job that I do on basically every project and making the computer do it instead.
And once you’ve got a few of these little systems working together, they save a ridiculous amount of time!

Had the pleasure of competing at Hampshire’s Strongest on Saturday! My second strongman comp and it was a big step up for me💪🏻

Even though I zeroed the overhead (which I kinda suspected I would) everything else went to plan. And I didn’t come last which was a huge bonus! 15/17 ain’t bad.

1. Axle Clean & Press (85kg) - 0 reps
2. Axle Deadlift (195kg) - 3 reps
3. Shield Hold (150kg) - 79 seconds
4. Duck Walk into Power Stairs (125kg) - 6 reps in 22.84 seconds
5. Sandbags & Stone (100kg) - 3 reps on sandbag, 0 reps on stone

Huge thanks to all the family and friends who came to cheer me on in the pouring rain ♥️

You don’t have to do everything yourself.

One of the biggest shifts you can make as an artist is building a team around your music.

If your strengths lie in songwriting and production, spend more of your time there. Find a great recording studio if you need help capturing performances. Work with a mix engineer who can take your songs and shape them into a finished record.

Not because you can’t do those things yourself, but because your time and energy are limited.

The artists who release music consistently are often the ones who know what to keep on their own plate and what to trust someone else with.

Focus on what you do best and let other people elevate the rest.

Recording is where everything starts, so get it right at the source!

Because if you get it wrong here, no amount of mixing or mastering can save it.

Here are 10 hard truths about recording. No fluff, no sugarcoating:

1. Your performance matters more than your gear.
2. If it sounds bad in the room, it’ll sound bad in the mix.
3. You can’t fix it in the mix.
4. The best takes aren’t perfect, they’re honest.
5. Preparation beats inspiration.
6. Room acoustics > expensive gear.
7. Bad communication ruins good sessions.
8. More takes don’t always mean better results.
9. Recording isn’t about showing off. It’s about serving the song.
10. If you don’t feel it, no one else will.

And my bonus tip:

Record with intention. Every take, note and mic choice should serve the emotion, not the ego.

I try to leave whatever emotions I’m carrying at the studio door.

If I’m stressed, distracted or emotionally drained it affects the way I hear music. I become less patient, second guess my decisions and can lose sight of what the song actually needs.

That’s why I take my routine so seriously. Good quality sleep. Exercise. Time away from the studio. Looking after my mental health.

None of those things are separate from mixing. They’re part of being able to show up fully for every artist I work with.

Your ears don’t work in isolation. They’re connected to your mind. The better state you’re in, the better decisions you’ll make and the better your work will be.
