Just an ordinary puddle on the street.
But look closely, and an entire world reflects in it.

🎨 Topic Challenge: Paint a puddle, and what's reflected in it.

A palette knife does something a brush can't.

Where a brush spreads the paint out, the knife lays down whole areas in a single pass. The edges stay sharp, the paint keeps its relief, and you can see exactly where the knife travelled. So don't smooth it over β€” that rough structure is the whole point.

Rough is good. 🌧️🎨

Eleven nibs, eleven different results.πŸ–‹οΈ

From broad poster nibs for solid bars to fine drawing nibs for hairlines. The nib you pick decides your whole line, so test them all on a scrap sheet before you start.

Broad to hairline.

Art tip: Let colors clash

Creating intensity doesn't always require detail or texture.
Sometimes it's simply a matter of placing opposing colors side by side.
They amplify each other automatically.

David Hockney already used this in 'A Bigger Splash', and it still works today. 🎨

Chestnuts, pinecones, moss, a stray leaf or two.

🎨 Topic Challenge: Draw a basket full of seasonal finds.

Liquin Impasto from Winsor & Newton gives your oils body straight away.πŸŽ¨πŸ–ŒοΈ

Mix it into your paint and you can work thick and buttery with a palette knife. It stays flexible, holds the shape of every stroke, and dries with a slight gloss.

For when the paint should really come off the canvas.

Acrylic paint won't stay on glass by itself.

With glass medium it will. Mix it one to one with your paint, let it dry, then bake the jar at 150 degrees. After that, whatever you've painted can go straight in the dishwasher.

From jar to autumn piece. πŸŽƒπŸ«™

Art tip: Let your brush speak

Creating relief and expression doesn't always require smooth layers of paint.
Sometimes it's simply a matter of applying paint thick and visible on the canvas.
The light does the rest.

Vincent van Gogh already used this in 'The Starry Night', and it still works today. 🎨

Art tip: Use color to suggest depth

Creating depth doesn't always require lines or shading.
Sometimes it's simply a matter of making distant colors lighter, cooler, and softer.
Our eyes read that as distance automatically.

Pieter Bruegel already used this in 'Hunters in the Snow', and it still works today. 🎨
