New work in New York. Artist Nick Cave has created a large installation on the NYC subway, produced using stained glass techniques and featuring interesting mosaic elements 🔺🟨🔷🟨🔺
Nick Cave - Visual Artist
Spanning the 42 St. Connector between Times Square and Bryant Park in New York City is a troupe of dancing figures dressed in vibrant costumes of feather and fur. A mosaic inspired by the wallpaper designs of Josef Frank, and made using a combination of vitreous glass and unglazed ceramic.
The glass brings colour and vibrancy and the ceramic calms everything down.
Made by me for a friend.
Inspired by Josef Frank and with the clients love of passion flowers I made this mosaic for a garden wall in Windsor.
Mosaic like this is made off-site using the 'indirect method'. Sometimes referred to as the 'reverse method' it is used for most professional jobs, particularly large mosaic installations.
Much nicer to work in the studio at a desk than outside sticking to a garden wall, as in this case!
And the client only has one day of disruption instead of weeks, depending on the size of the mosaic.
The process begins by reversing the design then transferring it onto thick brown paper using charcoal.
The tiles are cut to the design and stuck facedown onto the brown paper using water soluble glue.
Transferring the mosaic onto the wall is quite a skill and one that I teach on my courses.

In 1962 the L'Œuf study centre was set up by a collective of architects, sculptors, designers, and mosaicists. There they researched architectural surface decoration
The mosaicist was called Charles Gianferrari and his abstract work really appeals to me. I love his use of pattern, repetition and scale.
Together, the collective produced more than 200 installations, installed in building halls and public places, most of which included mosaic elements.

Finishing off the mosaic installations at Westminster Cathedral, and up several flights of scaffold, I realised I had vertigo.
Some days I'd be fine.
Some days I would cry as I worked, trying to fight the horrendous feelings and if anyone else moved I would have to lie down.
Some days I would have to give in and go home. I felt too exhausted to work with cramp in my calves from tensed feet in Converse.
We ALL had to stop working on Monday's because that was the day the guy came in to tune the organ. Listening to long, single notes bellowing out while pressing small pieces of smalti into adhesive all day was more than we could handle!

Florence Baptistry restoration in progress since 2017 with aims to finish this year. Last time I was in Florence was 1992. I shall have to visit again some day and see the newly restored mosaic shine..
The Florentine
Four sides of the internal walls of Florence Baptistery have been restored, with the remaining four to go by the end of 2021.
This is a detail of a mosaic made by myself, Tessa Hunkin and Miranda Symmington for Westminster Cathedral. The entire chapel took us a year and a half each to complete.
The mosaic was designed by Christopher Hobbs, and depicts the Martyrdom of St Thomas at one end, the scene you can see here in this photo, and at the opposite end of the chapel there is a scene depicting Thomas as a Saint. I was tasked with drapery, the decorative ceiling and the portrait of St Thomas as a Saint.
The chapel is called the Vaughan Chantry and can be found by walking down the left hand side of the Cathedral.
