“CBS is proud to introduce a major new figure in American folk music—Bob Dylan”. (Stacey Williams ‘Bob Dylan’ LP. liner notes – March 1962)

Today marks 60 years since the release of Bob Dylan’s eponymous, debut studio album, released by Columbia Records in 1962, when Bob was just 21 years old. The cover image for ‘Bob Dylan’ is a portrait by Columbia’s in-house photographer Don Hunstein, who also shot the photos for 1963's 'The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan' - two of his most enduring album sleeves, both of which were crucial in crystallizing Dylan's iconic identity.

Art & Music will be celebrating this milestone anniversary by publishing a small book, focusing on a less commonly discussed side of Bob Dylan’s oeuvre - the visual lexicon of his album covers.

We LOVE this gouache painting by of an early vhs copy of Tracey Emin’s Why I Never Became a Dancer. The original photo belongs to Sebastian Sharples and features in his book, Nothing to do but Dream. There’s something great about the painting describing the vhs itself rather than an image from the film.

We are taking a quick break from our film and book recommendations to give a shout out to A&M contributor Pete Astor’s new project.

The Attendant is a new collaboration between Pete Astor (The Weather Prophets, Ellis Island Sound) and Ian Button (Death in Vegas, Papernut Cambridge). The tracks were previously released on blink-and-you-missed-'em, lathe-cut seven-inches. The pared-down, poems-turned-songs, with their unearthly guitars and flickering drum machines, evoke the emptiness and sense of foreboding of the March 2020 lockdown and reflect the paradox for musicians and artists at that time who were torn between the freedom to create and the sadness and devastation all around.

The limited, 6-track mini album is released on clear 10” vinyl, numbered, signed and stamped. Availabe via Bandcamp.

I was chatting to someone recently and trying to explain who Joe Orton was. I probably wasn’t doing a great job as he asked “is there a film”?

There is a film and of course it doesn’t have the detail of the biography Prick up Your Ears: The Biography of Joe Orton by John Lahr or the Joe Orton Diaries... But it is a great film and worth a watch for the story, an intro to Orton and not least, for Gary Oldman.

“You’ll look funny when you’re fifty” Chas tells Turner. He was right. But, Performance 50 years on has never looked better.

This film is probably up there in our top ten as much for our love of its co-director Nic Roeg as the film itself. Set in bohemian ‘60s London Mick Jagger made his film debut as Turner, a reclusive rock star who takes in gangster fugitive Chas played by James Fox when he needs a place to hide out. The story unfolds amidst some very beautiful staging - rich, deep colours and powerful lighting enhance the films groundbreaking scenes.

Until the weather cheers up, we recommend catching up on some art and music movie classics and will post a few here that you might want to check out. One of our all time favourites is ‘Downtown ’81’ for its depiction of New York and her soon to be star Jean-Michel Basquiat. The film was originally shot in Winter 1980/81 with the intention of documenting the ‘downtown’ scene at that time, “I thought we should do a movie about this place because there’s something crazy happening,” the film’s art director and producer Maripol told Interview Magazine in 2019, “There’s no way this emergence of everything is going to last.”

We’ve been thinking a lot about about Arthur Russell this weekend, not least because he would have turned 70 last Friday. Back in 2008 David Sheppard reviewed Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell for Art & Music Magazine when it was first released. Russell’s music and philosophy has always stayed close to us. If you haven’t seen the film it’s worth a watch, or a rewatch. Here’s a snippet from David Sheppard’s original review:

"Wild Combination is a study of man totally immersed in the possibilities of music, more in love with the process of constructing it than he was in the finished product. It proffers the musician as a true artist – in diametric opposition to the generic, careerist box-ticking that defines so much post-Millennial music making. Although Arthur loved pop music (especially Fleetwood Mac and Abba – even his most esoteric outings are couched in winning melody and part of him always craved Abba-like success, even if the briefest exposure to the limelight blinded him) he was essentially an adventurer in sound, not a bloke looking for a career in the music industry.”

Back on the art trail and no better place to start than the Dub London: Bassline of a City at the Museum of London. The show is full of photographs, music and objects relating to the origins of Dub Reggae. The show includes the iconic speaker stack belonging to Channel One Sound System that has appeared yearly at Notting Hill Carnival since 1983. I recommend the audio tour by curator Cedar Lewisohn as he talks you through the places, the record shops, the sound systems and most importantly the people who he says are deserving of a show in their own right. Hearing their voices as you look at the photos brings the show to life. Free entry and easy to book. Check it out.

Curious to find out what's inside our new book 'Nothing do to but Dream: The Early Films of Tracey Emin'?

The 64 page book is filled with insight from filmmaker Sebastian Sharples who worked with Tracey Emin on her 2 early films 'Why I Became a Dancer' and 'How it Feels'.

In the book, he reveals what it was like to work with Tracey in the mid-90s, how the films were made and fills in the missing bits of the story.

We also have a terrific foreword by artist Jamie Holman who co-hosted our Facebook live last month and gives his views on the importance of Tracey's work and the stories she tells.

The book will be dispatched THIS WEEK, so make sure you don't miss out on this collectable limited edition book and order your copy now: artandmusicpublications.com/shop

"Saatchi had opened a gallery over in Swiss Cottage and you could go in for free. You could see a lot of Young British Artist's work." - Sebastian Sharples recalls.

The first use of the term was when entitled his exhibition 'Young British Artists I' in March 1992.

A key artwork from the movement was 's 'My Bed', consisting literally of her dishevelled, stained bed, surrounded by detritus including condoms, slippers and soiled underwear. This piece created an immediate and lasting media impact and further heightened her prominence.

Her early films are less known but tell very powerful stories.

In the book 'Nothing to do but Dream: The Early Films of Tracey Emin' filmmaker Sebastian Sharples reveals what it was like to work with Emin and how the were made.

"The story behind these two films really book-end Tracey’s younger, formative years, and galvanise her path to becoming the world-renowned artist she is today." - Sebastian Sharples, from the book 'Nothing to do but Dream'

(buy the book for £9.99 - link in bio)

How it Feels is one of Tracey Emin's most powerful works to date. It is the only film where Sebastian's voice is audible in the final version.

It's difficult to believe that Sebastian had no prior knowledge before the film was made what the context or subject would be and perhaps that's why he was personally so affected.

This is the first time he has talked about the making of the film and the part he played.
