Women Over 50 Film Festival

What a colourful time we had at the Womens Museum recently screening a selection of short films designed for people living with dementia and their families, friends and carers, in collaboration with Film London.

The theme of the season is 'Materiality of Memory' which explores how memories are held, shaped, and passed on, and whose stories are preserved within cultural history.

We were delighted to welcome filmmaker Anita (Anita Albrecht) and staff and residents of Forest View Care Home as audience members. We watched short films, chatted about them and got creative with colouring and drawing. We really loved Luke's modern art interpretation of 'Linda'. That's some serious materiality of memory right there!

Submissions to WOFFF26 may be officially closed, but there are still a few days left to submit a script or a film by requesting a Late Submission Waiver code from us. DM us to ask for the code or request a waiver via FilmFreeway by 25 June.

There’s just one day left to submit your short script to the Women Over 50 Film Festival 2026

We’re looking for short drama scripts, by or about women over 50 to be considered in our Best Short Script Prize in partnership with Shedunnit Productions.

Your short script must have a woman over 50 as a central character or be written by a woman over 50.

We’re looking for original drama stories that have not yet been produced.

It’s your last chance to submit a short film to our festival this year.

We’re looking for animations, comedies, dramas, documentaries or experimental films to be part of our 2026 programme. Selected films will be screened worldwide as part of our online festival in September this year.

Your film must have a woman over 50 as a central character or have a woman over 50 in the core creative team - that is as a writer, director or producer.

Submission fees apply and student films are free to submit.

Applications are now open for and Sony Pictures Television’s new Back in the Frame programme.

This is a free 6 month talent development programme supporting women and marginalised gender film directors/producers who are returning to the industry after a career break.

At WOFFF, we meet filmmakers whose paths into and through the industry have not always been straightforward, but the industry is all the better for having their experience, perspective and storytelling.

This programme will support 12 UK-based participants with mentoring, coaching, peer learning, industry networking and online and in-person sessions between September 2026 and March 2027.

Tonight, WOFFF founder Nuala O’Sullivan joins Ying-Di Yin, Isra Al Kassi and for the launch of Materiality of Memory, a new Film London programme in partnership with Women’s Museum.

The programme launches with a special panel discussion exploring women’s voices in film, filmmaking as a feminist practice, and the role of memory in shaping cinematic storytelling.

Representing WOFFF’s work championing older women on screen and behind the camera, Nuala will be part of a conversation about whose stories are remembered, archived and told through film, and how women continue to reshape the cinematic landscape.

There are just under two weeks left to submit short animations to the Women Over 50 Film Festival.

Animators, we want to see your stories.

Your film must be under 12 minutes and have a woman over 50 as a central character or in the core creative team - that means as a writer, producer or director.

Animation can do something very special: open up memory, imagination, politics, humour, grief, joy and whole inner worlds in ways live action sometimes can’t.

Last year at WOFFF The Illustrated Woman by Isabel Herguera, was the winner of our Best Animation award. Set during an animation workshop in Ahmedabad, the film shares the dreams of temporary tattoo artists: dreams of flying, political change, travel and independence.

Submit your short animation by 22 June 2026.

Student films can submit for free.

A week today, 17 June, we’re at screening a selection of films designed for people living with dementia and their families, friends and carers, in collaboration with .

From 11am we’ll screen six short films and then afterwards there will be some optional creative activities and a chance to chat about the films.

It will be a very relaxed event where everyone is welcome, come and go as you please, watch one film with us or stay for all six.

Are you a creative soul, based in Leytonstone, over 50 and looking for a warm, welcoming community?

Well, you’re in luck, because we’re back at Good Shepherd Studios today (4 June), for an afternoon of short films and creative activities.

From 2pm it’s chair-based yoga-inspired exercise.

At 3pm it’s time for hot drinks and snacks, followed by two short films:

🎥 Two Travelling Aunties, dir. Christine Seow
Singaporeans Norah (55) and Susie (60) ditch conventional living for van life, embracing adventure and newfound freedom. At its heart this road trip movie is a love story - a celebration of courage, companionship, and the freedom to truly be ourselves.

🎥 The Second Time Around, dir. Jack Howard
It’s raining outside and Elle’s closing the café for the evening. A woman knocks on the door. She’s drenched, can she come in just for a minute? Elle takes pity on the stranger and invites her in. The past and the present collide.

It’s free to attend and you don’t need to book. Just drop in to Good Shepherd Studios in Leytonstone from 2pm.

We're with the campaign calling on the film industry to have better representation of older women in film.

An article in The Guardian highlights research which notes box office hit films are four times more likely to star a talking animal than a woman over 60.

Reflecting on this Age Without Limits research, Emma Thompson says, “Women are half the population and we get older. So where are the stories about us? The older we get, the more interesting we are. I want to see more films centre on ageing women, we are compelling, relatable, and overdue for centre stage. Older women don’t need permission to exist on screen. They already exist in the world, cinema just needs to catch up.”

We love film with animals, but come on, let's see more films with women over 50, 60, 70 and beyond on screen and behind the camera.
