She rejected me… so why does she keep acting like she doesn’t want to lose me?**
I honestly don’t know if I’m overthinking this, so I need people to be brutally honest with me.
I’ll call her **Maya**.
Maya and I are in our early twenties, and we’ve always been extremely close. At one point, there were feelings between us. I liked her. She liked me too.
But eventually, she told me she didn’t want a relationship with me.
She said that because we both struggled with anxiety and depression, she didn’t think being together would be healthy for either of us.
I accepted it.
Or at least, I tried to.
Maya eventually got a boyfriend, and I genuinely wanted to respect that.
The problem is… **her actions toward me have never really matched her words.**
She’ll reject me romantically, but then do things that leave me wondering whether she actually wants me around in a way she refuses to admit.
We’ve held hands while watching movies.
She has sat on my lap, wrapped her leg around mine, and we’ve even slept in the same bed when she stays over.
Maybe those things mean absolutely nothing to her.
But when you have feelings for someone, you notice things like that.
And then there are the questions.
One day, she randomly asked me:
“If I were pregnant with your baby and the doctor could only save one of us, who would you choose?”
I thought it was some ridiculous hypothetical question, so I answered honestly.
I said the baby.
She got upset.
Eventually, I told her I would choose her.
Later, I found out she had asked several other people the exact same question.
So maybe that one doesn't mean anything.
But then there was the situation with my dating life.
We were joking about my bed squeaking, and I casually said it would be embarrassing if I had someone over.
She immediately started asking:
“Who are you sleeping with?”
I laughed it off.
She asked again.
And again.
I kept telling her I didn't want to talk about my s*x life and tried changing the subject.
She wouldn't let it go.
Eventually, she even contacted one of my close friends to find out.
When I finally admitted I had been talking to someone but it hadn't worked out, her entire mood changed.
Suddenly, she was happy and playful again.
That really confused me.
Then came the one that really made me question everything.
I made a post where friends could ask me anything.
Maya commented:
“Smash or pass?”
I asked, “Smash or pass who?”
She replied:
“Me.”
Maybe she was joking.
Maybe it was completely innocent.
But she has a boyfriend.
So why would someone who rejected me, while currently in a relationship, ask me whether I'd sleep with her?
Then one night, we were out drinking with friends.
I started talking to another girl I liked.
Maya noticed.
She came over and joined the conversation.
Later that night, when it was just the two of us, she started asking me about the girl.
Then, after she'd had quite a bit to drink, she pulled me aside and said:
“Promise me our friendship will always be more important than anyone else.”
I didn't know what to say.
Because what exactly does that mean?
You're in a relationship.
You rejected me.
But you don't want another woman getting close to me either?
And then there's the constant questioning about my s*x life.
How many people have you slept with?
Who are you sleeping with?
Would you sleep with me?
Questions I never ask her.
Questions I don't particularly want to answer.
At first, I thought maybe I was imagining things.
Maybe she was just affectionate.
Maybe she's naturally possessive with her friends.
Maybe I'm reading too much into it because I used to have feelings for her.
But after a while, it started making me uncomfortable.
And honestly?
Some of it gave me the biggest **ick**.
I've slowly lost the romantic feelings I once had for her.
I still care about her.
I still value our friendship.
But I'm starting to wonder if this friendship has been emotionally confusing for both of us.
Because I don't understand how someone can say **“I don't want you romantically”** while constantly behaving in ways that make you question whether they actually want you to themselves.
Maybe she genuinely sees me as nothing more than a friend.
Maybe she's jealous.
Maybe she likes the attention.
Maybe she has feelings she's never dealt with.
Or maybe I'm completely wrong.
**So I need honest opinions:**
If someone rejects you but gets jealous when you talk to other people, questions your dating and s*x life, asks if you'd sleep with them, gets physically affectionate, and tells you your friendship should matter more than everyone else…
**what would you think?**
Would you call this mixed signals?
Or am I reading way too much into a friendship?
I genuinely want to hear both sides.
Will you still stay friends with such friends?
