2026 marks 100 years since the death of Claude Monet, the artist whose name became almost synonymous with Impressionism.

In 1874, Monet exhibited Impression, Sunrise in Paris. Critic Louis Leroy seized on its title to mock the radical new style as “Impressionism”. The name stuck.

Monet spent the next half-century pursuing exactly what had so divided critics: the fleeting effects of light, weather and atmosphere. He returned to subjects again and again, from Mediterranean landscapes to haystacks, Rouen Cathedral and, finally, the water lily pond at Giverny.

Monet died there on 5 December 1926, aged 86. By then, he had spent more than half a century transforming the way artists looked at light, colour and landscape.

A century later, the movement once named in ridicule is inseparable from his name.
