Historically, competitions provided many of Britain’s most acclaimed architects with their first big break. In our more risk averse climate, is it still worth young practices pursuing opportunities through competition? To discuss how young practices can best navigate this challenging terrain, POST PRESS is joined tomorrow night by two people with extensive experience of running competitions. Ken Kinsella ran the competition for a series of major competitions at the LSE, including buildings ultimately designed by O'Donnell + Tuomey, and David Chipperfield Architects. Cindy Walters is co-founder of Walters & Cohen Architects and has served on the jury of numerous competitions including Kingston University’s new art school, which was won by Grafton.

Tickets for Competition Culture are £5 and available from www.architecturefoundation.org.uk 🔗Link in bio.

Images: Trinity College Library (ABK), Pompidou Centre (Piano and Rogers), Yokohama Port Terminal (Foreign Office Architects), Walsall Art Gallery (Caruso St John), Brockholes Visitor Centre (Adam Khan Architects). These commissions were all won by emerging practices in competition.

A petition has been launched by Ruairidh Moir calling for the full and faithful restoration of the Glasgow School of Art: https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/fully-restore-the-glasgow-school-of-art-mackintosh-building?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio&fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQPOTM2NjE5NzQzMzkyNDU5AAGny49DUguTRBzgq2QL_E5322qBCKmUZU2Y4eE_7V3KJIXd_J7ccvulfPHQM38_aem_kYVKpbr_HNjEpCapolgAvg

Please consider signing and share widely. This is the text of the petition:

We, the undersigned, support the following:

* full and faithful restoration and reinstatement of the Glasgow School of Art building, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh;

* No erosion of Mackintosh’s the original design intent.

We urge that:

* Building Standards are not used as an excuse for a pastiche or compromised collection of ‘Mackintosh best bits’;
* original materials must be used to preserve authenticity;
* discrete, state-of-the-art fire suppression must be incorporated throughout at all stages.

To achieve this, the following measures will be required:

* permanent ownership of the building and its site must be transferred to an independent organisation, specifically designed to deliver the reinstatement and secure the buildings long term future;
* the building should be made available on a lease-back arrangement to GSA to ensure that it continues as a working art school;
* the support, either directly through financing the works or ensuring the availability of finance, of the Scottish and/or UK governments as required will be key to delivering this internationally important project.

There has been inaction for far too long. We urge the Scottish Government and/or the UK government to take immediate action towards an early start on this project upon which the future credibility on Glasgow and Scotland will depend.
