In the final year of his life, the man who had been one of the most polarizing figures in America began to speak with a new, universal clarity. After traveling through Africa and the Middle East in 1964, Malcolm X returned with a philosophy that prioritized objective justice over blind group loyalty. He understood that the greatest threat to a society is the internal refusal to acknowledge its own flaws.
You are not to be so blind with patriotism that you can't face reality. Wrong is wrong, no matter who does it or says it.
Malcolm X remains a towering figure in the struggle for human rights because he refused to let ideology override the truth. He taught that an honest individual must be willing to critique their own country and their own leaders with the same rigor they apply to their adversaries. If we cannot name an injustice because it is committed by someone we support, we have lost our moral compass.
