We are happy to announce that AMANDA NOAR is directing CHAINS by FRANCESCA ROSE.

Amanda Noar is an award-winning director and choreographer. She has worked extensively in theatre, film, and TV as a performer, producer, director, and choreographer.

Directing credits at Upstairs at the Gatehouse include: Pippin; The world premiere of Moominvalley in November; Road Show; You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown (also Shanghai Transfer), A Slice of Saturday Night (2023), and Working: A Musical (2019), which received rave reviews and a seal of approval from Stephen Schwartz himself!

A note from the writer:

It feels as though things have been a bit quiet from this end since our successful runs of my last play, Learning. However I am delighted to have written the first draft of my next play. Chains traces the story of Dina who is ‘chained’ in marriage to her abusive husband, Lewis. She is known as an ‘Agunah’, a chained woman. Lewis refuses to grant her the Jewish divorce known as a ‘Get’. I am currently looking in to arranging an initial rehearsed reading of this first draft in collaboration with Upstairs at the Gatehouse Theatre. More to be announced in 2026!

raised, one of which is the limitations religion places on
women......Another theme is individual freedom within a
relationship and how it can be achieved....The stage is bare apart from the piano and a couple of stools that are expertly used by the actors to move around the acting area, creating the home and the consulting room. Gemma Franco provides the play with a haunting original musical score. The purple light on the piano creates a quiet, comforting place..."
