SAMO : TRANSATLANTICATION

Installation views from Al Diaz’s first UK solo exhibition at D’Stassi Art, London.

A founding voice behind SAMO©, Diaz helped shape a language that emerged from the streets of late 1970s New York and became part of one of the defining moments in contemporary art and culture.

The exhibition brings together original works, collage, photography, editions and interventions that continue that history in London.

SAMO : TRANSATLANTICATION is now open and available to view at the gallery.

Monday to Thursday: 11am to 6pm
Friday: 11am to 4pm

Private viewings can also be arranged by appointment.

Hypebeast has published an extensive new interview with Al Diaz, looking back at the origins of SAMO©, his early creative relationship with Jean-Michel Basquiat, and the history that continues to inform his work today.

Diaz reflects on the original intent behind SAMO©, the collaborative process of constructing statements and ideas, and why he has continued to reclaim and develop that language decades later.

The interview accompanies SAMO : TRANSATLANTICATION, Diaz’s first solo exhibition in the UK, currently presented at D’Stassi Art in London.

Drawing directly from the visual language of New York’s subway system, the works continue Diaz’s long-standing interest in public language, signage and interruption, turning familiar materials into compact, singular statements.

Two major features on Al Diaz and SAMO© are now live.

Complex looks at the new SAMO© x DARKCIRCLE capsule, created around SAMO : TRANSATLANTICATION, Al Diaz’s UK debut exhibition at D’Stassi Art.

The feature explores the collaboration across clothing, prints, objects and large-scale textile works, including pieces individually worked on by Diaz.

Hypebeast goes deeper into the history of SAMO©, with Diaz discussing its origins with Jean-Michel Basquiat, the ideas behind the project, and why he has continued to reclaim and develop its language decades later.

Both pieces offer a wider look at the history behind the work and the new chapter being presented in London now.

A SLICE OF NYC HISTORY. HAND-FINISHED BY AL DIAZ.

Now available online at D’Stassi Art: MY NAME IS, an exclusive edition created to coincide with Al Diaz’s UK debut exhibition, SAMO : TRANSATLANTICATION.

Each work begins with the iconic red HELLO MY NAME IS format before being individually intervened upon by Diaz by hand. No two are the same.

The result is an edition of 25 unique works, each hand-finished, signed and numbered by Al Diaz.

Diaz co-created SAMO© with Jean-Michel Basquiat on the streets of late-1970s New York, making these works a direct continuation of a visual language that became part of the history of downtown NYC.

AL DIAZ / SAMO© TAKES TO THE STREETS OF LONDON.

Ahead of AL DIAZ: SAMO : TRANSATLANTICATION, Diaz has taken his work beyond the gallery walls with a new street intervention on Drysdale Street directly alongside D’Stassi Art in Shoreditch.

A fitting return to the street for an artist whose work has been part of New York’s visual language for almost five decades.

And a familiar face stopped by to lend a hand. stik joined Al at the wall as the intervention came together.

Inside the New York studio of Al Diaz, the artist behind SAMO©.

We sat down with Al to talk about his beginnings in New York, the creation of SAMO©, his relationship and collaboration with Jean-Michel Basquiat, and the story behind a body of work that became part of the visual language of the city.

We also look ahead to London.

On 25 September, D’Stassi Art presents TRANSATLANTICATION, Al Diaz’s first UK exhibition, bringing SAMO© from New York to London for his UK debut.

The exhibition will present a new body of original works alongside a programme of collaborations and interventions created around Al’s arrival in the city.
