LONDON

This September, D’Stassi Art presents the UK debut exhibition of pioneering New York artist and SAMO© co-creator Al Diaz.

A formative figure in New York’s downtown art and graffiti culture, Diaz developed SAMO© with Jean-Michel Basquiat in the late 1970s, using language, wit and intervention to transform the streets of Lower Manhattan into a space for ideas.

Nearly five decades later, his practice continues to explore language, authorship, public space and contemporary culture.

SAMO : TRANSATLANTICATION brings that story to London through a new body of work created for D’Stassi Art.

Al Diaz will be joining us from New York for the opening.

Who is Al Diaz?

Before SAMO© became part of art history, before Jean-Michel Basquiat became one of the most celebrated artists of his generation, Al Diaz was already writing across New York.

A first-generation graffiti artist, musician, co-creator of SAMO© and lifelong explorer of language, Diaz has spent more than five decades working with the words, signs and visual systems of the city around him.

His story moves from BOMB-ONE and the subway-writing culture of 1970s New York, through his friendship and collaboration with Basquiat, to Beat Bop, WET PAINT and the work he continues to make today.

The strongest exhibitions are increasingly becoming more than rooms of artworks.

Tate Modern’s Frida Kahlo programme now extends into food and hospitality through a collaboration with Michelin-starred chef Santiago Lastra. Across London, galleries and institutions are also bringing exhibitions together with music, film, performance, fashion, technology and live programming.

For us, this reflects something D’Stassi Art has always believed.

Art can still feel difficult to enter. Galleries can appear silent, unfamiliar and governed by rules that nobody has properly explained. Even people who are genuinely interested in art can feel unsure whether they understand enough to belong.

Food, music, film, fashion, product and live experiences can create other points of entry.

Someone might arrive for dinner, a DJ, a film screening or a cultural collaboration, but leave having formed a genuine connection with an artist.

Across our programme, Malik Roberts transformed the gallery and took his work into the street. Didier Chamizo extended painting onto a custom-built Harley-Davidson. Trevor Andrew brought together art, music, fashion, product and hospitality. Lady Pink’s exhibition was supported by immersive installation, film and historical storytelling.

The artwork must always remain at the centre.

But the culture built around it can help more people find their way there.

A Life You Love and The Everyday Sublime were recently announced for the London Original Print Fair and are now available at the opening price of £950 unframed.

Printed at Worton Hall Studios, both works are released in editions of 50 and measure 82 × 115 cm.

The editions combine giclée printing with screen-printed areas, hand torn edges and refined surface details, with The Everyday Sublime also featuring diamond dust.

Thierry Noir in Tokyo.

For his recent project ‘In the Neighbourhood’, Noir brought his unmistakable visual language into Kawashima Shopping Street, a historic Showa-era neighbourhood in Nakano, Tokyo.

Rather than creating murals that dominate the street, many of the works are hidden inside long-standing local businesses: laundries, barbers, restaurants, cycle shops and everyday interiors that still carry the rhythm of local life.

The result is public art without spectacle. Noir’s characters become part of the neighbourhood itself, discovered through doorways, counters, working spaces and the people who keep the street alive.

We have published a new blog on D’Stassi Art looking at the project, the Showa context and why Noir’s practice continues to resonate from Berlin to Tokyo.

STIK’s Liberty mural in New York has reportedly been spared from being painted over, following a wave of public concern from the local community, collectors and supporters.

Painted in Tompkins Square in 2013, Liberty is more than a landmark mural. STIK describes the work as a power salute to the radical history of the area, including the 1874 workers’ riots and the 1988 housing riots.

That context matters.

STIK’s figures are famously minimal, but their emotional and social weight is rarely simple. A raised arm, a held hand, a standing figure, each gesture carries presence, vulnerability, resistance and solidarity.

The reaction around Liberty says a great deal about STIK’s place in contemporary street art. His work is not only collected, it is recognised, remembered and defended by the communities around it.

From Hackney to New York, STIK’s practice has always been rooted in visibility and shared public space. The saving of Liberty is a reminder that some works become more than images. They become part of a city’s memory.

Following the original timed release of Graffiti: Her Story, Lady Pink has revisited 5 retained studio impressions in her New York studio, hand-finishing each one individually.

Across the borders, she has added intricate drawings, tags, characters, symbols and miniature scenes, transforming each piece into a unique work on paper.

The original timed release remains the only standard edition of the image and is being handled separately. This VIP suite sits apart as a group of just 5 unique hand-finished variants, each one different, each one carrying Lady Pink’s unmistakable New York hand.
