Preaface Ceramics Handcrafted functional and sculptural ceramics by UK potter Charlotte Collier-Hunter

Charlotte Collier-Hunter is the London-based ceramic artist behind Preaface Ceramics, creating quietly distinctive stoneware for homes, restaurants, and considered spaces worldwide. A former nurse turned maker, her practice is rooted in attention to detail through care for material, for process, and for the objects we choose to live with every day. Working in small batches from her East London stu

dio, Charlotte crafts functional and sculptural pieces that balance restraint with expression. Her forms are tactile and enduring, shaped by the alchemy of clay, fire, and time, and finished with glazes that invite both use and contemplation. These are objects made not to sit still, but to be handled, shared, and slowly woven into daily ritual. Her work is informed by lived experience as a neurodivergent artist with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, embracing contrast as a creative language: strength and vulnerability, softness and structure, tradition and experimentation. Subtle irregularities and surface variation are not corrected but honoured—marks of the human hand that give each piece its own quiet authority. Since founding Preaface Ceramics in 2021, Charlotte has produced bespoke tableware for design-led restaurants, private collectors, and retail spaces, alongside sculptural work for exhibition. Sustainability and longevity sit at the heart of the studio’s philosophy with pieces made to endure, to age well, and to be passed on. Each work emerges as a conversation between maker and material, guided rather than forced. The result is stoneware that feels both ancient and contemporary as objects with presence, purpose, and a calm confidence that reveals itself over time. Charlotte welcomes enquiries for commissions, wholesale collaborations, and one-off pieces. Whether you are sourcing tableware for a restaurant, curating a retail collection, or selecting a singular object for your home, conversations are always approached with care and curiosity. Thoughtful customisation is available, allowing each piece to respond to its setting and the people who will live with it. Her studio philosophy champions sustainability, slow craftsmanship, and the celebration of creativity. From the hum of the wheel to the unpredictable magic of the kiln, Charlotte approaches each piece as a conversation between maker, material, and time, resulting in work that feels both ancient and entirely contemporary.

On the bank holiday Monday I was fortunate enough to attend a glorious afternoon curated by at Brompton Cemetery hosted by experiencing a spectacular exhibition by .Risso whose pieces were lovingly recreated in chocolate by the insanely talented and available to sample.

If you know me, I have a versatile appetite, craving novelty and depth, flitting out to strange horizons and burrowing back into familiar ones when the mood strikes. Predictable only in my unpredictability and so gifted one of the pieces in chocolate meant a little fun in the studio.

Come with me as I go to .Collective to have a cast done by the fabulous owners Leyla and May for their first session of The B**b Wall.

A collective installation at Damsel, built from real breasts and chests, made with collective care for anyone with a breast to share or a chest they’d like to bare. It’s about being more than how we look right now, honouring yourself as you are, everyone who’s ever felt like you, and the beauty (and gift) of change.

This installation is an ongoing project, encompassing empowerment, a celebration of community energy and a day to socialise with some incredible people in a place that has come to feel like home for me and a day I will treasure forever.

There’s another session next week and you can catch me there for the early session helping out and drinking my new favourite beverage, the Damsel version of A London Fog (which was appropriate on the day this was filmed).

I’m the first to admit when I don’t know something, but failure is feedback and art is p0litics and if you’re not following me and come onto my post to tell me I “wouldn’t need all these things if I learn how to do it properly “ then I’m grateful to you for taking time out of your busy schedule to comment because in a hundred years I won’t be here, but my work will be.

The repetition of making the same forms is indeed meditative as a potter, but sometimes the chaos of listening to clay and trusting the process is preferable on cold rainy winter days in London.

This means testing glaze combinations to see how they react on textured surfaces and new (to me) clays, and so I am working with the clay to test its limits (and mine at times) and this is the result.
