Raphael Tuck & Sons, were one of Britain's best-known postcard publishers, published the postcard. An especially interesting feature of this example is that the postcard can be dated from its postal history. The card carries an Aigburth, Liverpool postmark
dating from 1908. This provides useful provenance and establishes that, although the subject is a Kent garden, this particular example travelled to Liverpool and entered the postal system there in 1908.
The Childwall Hall Connection Even more intriguing is the original
address on the reverse: Childwall Hall, Childwall, Liverpool Childwall Hall was an important historic country house associated with the Gascoyne family. The estate had a long history in the area before Liverpool Corporation acquired the property in the late 1930s. The Hall itself was subsequently demolished in 1949.
