Sandra was born in Liverpool at the end of the Second World War. After leaving Calder High School in the early 1960s to study medicine at Liverpool University, it would be nearly 50 years before she decided to turn her hand to painting. She attended weekly local art classes with friends, working mainly with watercolours and mixed media before choosing to concentrate on acrylics. To create her pict
ures, Sandra works freehand from the catalogue of photographs she has taken while travelling abroad, and from views of her favourite Liverpool parks and the Llŷn Peninsula coast in North Wales, where she has spent family holidays every year since she was very young. Having retired from her career as a community paediatrician supporting children with special needs, Sandra travelled widely around the world with her husband David. Their journeys took them several times to New Zealand, where they had lived for a year in the 1970s, and to parts of every continent bar Antarctica. Together they zip-wired, microlighted, heli-hiked, abseiled, hot air ballooned, and white water rafted through some of the planet’s most beautiful landscapes. Since David died of Covid-19 in 2021, Sandra has focused increasingly on her art, and is delighted to have been become part of the community of artists working with Liverpool's Gallery 455.
