Last night was one of those occasions where I wanted to squeeze on tight to every moment because I knew it is a once in a lifetime experience. To be invited to the Fig Tree dinner as one of their authors was surreal, 16 year old Marisa would have never believed you. To be in the same room as, and hear such beautiful, challenging, heart wrenching stories from other Fig Tree authors was humbling. I’m looking forward to pouring over each of their books on the train journey home (in what is the largest bag of books I’ve ever attempted to take back to Scotland).
Like a border collie in a room full of tennis balls I’m going to struggle to choose which to start with.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone Fig Tree Penguin Books for hosting such an exquisite evening and for every person who shared a words of encouragement to this slightly dazed new author.

Two Manchester beauties The Bookworms and Chorlton Bookshop caught on my last trip to the city. Gutted I didn’t have time to visit Simply Books! But glad I’ll be able to catch their brand new bookshop concept “Prologue” (it looks stunning) when I return 🙌

A holiday to a remote Hebridean island with no bookshops but lots of birds. I snoozed, and read, and tried my hand at something new, a little lapwing. I wasn’t sure whether the lessons learned while location drawing would also apply here but they did. I find it difficult to accept but a restricted amount of time really works for me. Don’t get me wrong it stresses me out, my heart races against the timer but I’m always happier with the result than the one I labour over. Forced to focus and move my hand to what really matters I find the drawing more characterful and energetic. Just so happens the wonderful book I brought with me by suggests the same works for her too ☺️

As part of the National Year of Reading and poetry month I’m reading poem Treelight from her new book ‘Emergency Dream’ after a perfect day visiting and . Where better to read than under a tree in St Andrews church yard in Penrith.

I feel poetry is such a personal thing, so much to do with the music and rhythm of words, especially when spoken. I’m conscious about how I have delivered yours Polly, but I think they are beautiful.

A visit to Lala Books and earlier this year made for the perfect day in London. The architecture and interior design of this bookshop made me swoon. Everything about this bookshop is beautiful down to the flat whites .

Happy Independent Bookshop Week! 🙌 A perfect time to say a big thank you to all our wonderful, hardworking Indies. These precious places mean so much to me, and bring so much joy to so many.

Taking a break from painting bookshops today and having the most fun painting their furry friends instead. Meet Juno from , she is a Bedlington Whippet and when not hard at work promoting new releases she can be found snoozing under the counter or playing in the bookshops secret garden. Isn’t she gorgeous ☺️
