Haven't posted for a while but here is last portrait I finished, his name is Riley. I'm well pleased with this one as the picture to work from wasn't great. Enjoyed creating his scruffy look which is what client was hoping.

Back to pets, 16x12" portrait of sphynx brothers. Dobby in the centre died young of genetic issue. Thor and loki are from the same parents so I thought it would be nice to have them together. A special gift for my wife who adores it.
🎨
Happy new year to all, I can finally post the Xmas portraits I was workng on, I've actually discovered a passion for drawing people. This is the first, hope you like it.
This is Maddie a cockerpoo who has just been handed to my client, she said " now that is Maddie". Such a relief to hear positive feed back as the photos were not great. Composed from 3 different pictures to get desired result 🎨
Finally finished this double portrait of Pablo the bulldog with his fur brother Bear a ragdoll cross British Shorthair have to say Bear was a challenge with his long fur, it is my nemesis, but I think I've pulled it off. Client thinks it's great which is always reassuring. Great fun to do though, on to the next commission now.

Time for an update...
Current WIP is a double portrait of a bulldog pup and his feline brother who could never get photographed together. Been a tricky one but fun doing all the wrinkles. Overall coming on pretty well I think. Polychromos and Derwent drawing on 16x12" canvas paper.
I can now share my latest portrait which is going to a new home in Tennessee, say hello to Hilde, a sweet swedish Vallhund.
First portrait I've done in traditional profile and really enjoyed it and Hilde has such a textured coat. 🎨
My last portrait was of a collie called jack when he was a youngster, this one is of jack when he was a lot older, he passed away at the great old age of nearly 18. 🎨
Finished portrait of jack a young collie, also doing a larger one off him when he is older.
Hope you like him.
Doberman Pinscher finished, if I was selling this i would tidy it up some more, but I'm just practicing with pastels for now, but I do love how easy it is to blend the colours. Let's start another..
Really wasn't liking the first few layers at all, now I've done some more, it's starting to look like a doberman.
Still practicing with pastel pencils and pastelmat surface. Love how pastel lays down and how much quicker blocking in is, looking muddy at this stage as still a bit heavy on the base layers, practice, practice, practice...
Trying something different, I have wanted to try some pastel work so three firsts for me over the weekend.
Drawing a rattle snake with Faber Castell Pitt pastels on Claire Fontaine pastelmat.
Haven't got the detail I was after but I've got the depth I wanted. I love the way pastels blend and layer together, but I found getting the detail rather tricky.
Not a pet I know, Trying something different, namely portraits of people. I finished this today which was gifted to friends, a portrait of thier son. This is the first human portrait I've completed in coloured pencils and I'm thrilled to bits with the finished piece. I may well start doing more, or people with their pets. Hope you like this drawing as much as I do and as much as Josh did.
Finished and delivered, Charlie a labradoodle with a pronounced tooth. This was very challenging and frustrating, I was forever getting lost and losing my direction in the fur.
In the end I believe I have got a semblance of curly fur, but i think it could be better. Pleased the client loved it, which is the main thing really. I am going to have to do more long curly fur studies.
Customer collected thier portrait over the weekend of a little patterdale called Bobby. Hope you like him. For this one I used indenting process a lot to get all the little white and grey hairs in.
It is so good to see a happy customer receiving thier portrait with the subject of the portrait getting in frame. 🙂
First of the new year's portraits to be posted, some progress photos of the drawing and the mounting afterwards. This pug was a lot of fun to draw and I am really pleased with the finished piece, the client messaged meet to say she loves it and her mum was in tears when receiving it. Hope you all like it as much.
I'm really pleased with this commission, it was going to be two separate portraits until client asked about combining the two, it's so much better like this, client messaged me to say his wife loves it. Hope you all like it.
I can now safely post those secret Xmas commissions, may I introduce you to Fig.
This is the only portrait I can post before Christmas without a spoiler alert, I have others to share after. Well you've heard of cat in a hat, here we have...
Had a lot of fun drawing this portrait, lovely brown lab with loads of character.
Finished, mounted and handed to client earlier today. He thought he would have a favourite one but loved them both, I'm really proud of these two and enjoyed doing these side by side. I enjoy mounting them as much as the drawing, it just completes the portraits.
Haven't posted in a while, back at the drawing board again and currently working on a pair of portraits of a Dogue De Bordeaux or French Mastiff. Her name is Pacha and she is a huge softy, working on them side by side so I keep the colouring the same.
French wrestling. Our frenchie having a wrestle with her best friend.
I fancied doing this in graphite, just to have a draw.
Nice to see a picture of your work after its been framed by client, and to know they are pleased with what you have done. Thanks for sharing.
Just finished mounting this portrait of a black maltese, she is a sweet little girl who goes by the name of Clara. Hope you like her.
Bella the Bichon is now finished and I think she looks great in a double mount. I have really enjoyed working on this piece and learnt how to use the negative spaces to create depth.

This is my latest pet portrait that I handed to client yesterday, it was a surprise wedding anniversary gift of their beloved Ruby and Paddy, a pair of Lhasa Apso which I had never heard of before.
Portrait was done on A3 canvas effect 260gsm paper and had to be composed from two different photos then changed the posture to suit. I'm really pleased with the finished piece, even though it was quite challenging. client loved it and said it will bring them to tears.
Update to earlier post, which started out as a single eye study. Maybe it's me but one eye didn't sit right, I like to have balance. Anyway decided earlier to do the rest of the features turning it into a facial study. Tweaked the eyes after some good advice, which I think has improved the glassy effect overall.
Thought id do an eye study for some practice, ended up being both eyes I enjoyed the process so much. Now I think I'm going to do the nose and mouth as well. I'm pleased with how the eyes came out, could still be better though.
Here is my latest work finished and ready to go. Lovely little lilac and tan frenchie going by the name of Delilah. Loved doing this one, but then I do love frenchies, they have so much character. Hope you all like it as much as I do and the client does.
Here is the finished double portrait of the two labs, the black lab passed away last year, I find a bit more pressure on you when it's a memorial piece, but I'm really pleased with how it turned out and more importantly the client loves it.
This is the first half of a double portrait of two labs, one of which is sadly no longer here. I started with the yellow lab as the reference image wasn't great, looking forward to commemorating the black lab next and completing composition.
,
I fancied having a go at a portrait with soft pastels and pastel pencils. Reference is my own of Thor. Haven't finished yet, got his feet to do and maybe a bit of tweaking here and there.
So far so good I think, what do you think.
This is my first memorial portrait. Ravi, a sweet little long haired Chihuahua who is also my first international piece, he is going home to Louisiana. It was a pleasure to do his portrait and looked like a right character.
