Back in May we visited Sheffield Museums for a symposium called Making Room for Children and Art by Assunta Ruocco ✨
Making Room for Children and Art brought together artists, curators, researchers and art workers to share, discuss and develop thinking around intergenerational collaboration and the conditions that support artist-parents in cultural institutions, studios and public spaces.
With a dedicated mobile studio by Assunta and Lou Art Club there was space for our kids to create while listened to the brilliant speakers.
We also had an opportunity to each share our own journey and art practice with the group which felt validating and good to do some public speaking while my daughter watched 😁
Non stop painting that day!
Assunta created an important and interesting event and it was wonderful to be in the same space as lots of like minded people.
Inspired by artist Shirley Cameron’s pioneering work, the day centred on the idea that parent-child collaboration is one of a number of strategies through which artists have found ways to continue making work alongside caregiving, and set out to examine what other strategies exist, what has been learned, and what kinds of institutional change might make continuing a creative practice alongside caregiving more possible.
And with some awesome speakers including Shirley Cameron, and The Art Working Parents Alliance it was such a great day, more of this please!
