Lechlade in the Glow of Christmas 🎄

December settles in with crisp and gentle air,
The switch on floods the town with brightness everywhere,
Neighbours gather close sharing warmth beyond compare,
A soft glow drifting through the night so calm and fair,

The shining tree beside the church stands proud and bright,
Its peaceful gleam brings comfort in the frosty night,
Children draw near feeling calm beneath its light,
Their quiet wonder turning cold to pure delight,

The shop fronts glimmer softly where the garlands glow,
Warm windows shield the townsfolk from the drifting snow,
A house wrapped neatly with one great red festive bow,
A gift to passers by who feel its gentle flow,

Then down each lane comes Santa riding through the cold,
His sleigh bells sounding stories that the young are told,
Lanterns sparkle high as magic takes its hold,
And hearts in Lechlade shine with Christmas joy untold.

Halloween in Lechlade

By the riverside where the willows creep,
And the Thames runs dark in its autumn sleep,
Lechlade whispers through misty air,
Of shadowed secrets lurking there.

Pumpkins glow on the old High Street,
Candles flicker where cobbles meet,
Children gather in cloaks and lace,
With painted fangs and a ghostly face.

The church bells toll with a hollow chime,
Marking mischief and midnight time,
While fog drifts low by Halfpenny Bridge,
And owls keep watch from the meadow’s ridge.

The wind curls round the Swan’s old door,
And rattles the sign like tales of yore,
Old stories stir where the waters gleam,
And Lechlade shivers within its dream.

Lanterns swing in the market square,
Casting spells on the frosty air,
And if you listen by water’s gleam,
You might just catch a phantom’s dream.

So tread with care where the dark winds creep,
While spirits wake and the town’s asleep,
It’s whispers ride through the river mist,
In Lechlade’s spell, the dead persist.

Monks Walk

Along the path where cold fog weaves,
Through dying light and fallen leaves,
The Thames moves slow, its whisper low,
Where monks once prayed so long ago.

Their voices lost, their vows remain,
Bound to the earth by time and pain,
Through mist and memory they glide,
Where faith and shadow still collide.

The crows above cry harsh and deep,
Awakening those who do not sleep,
And though the world forgets their name,
The air still hums with their refrain.

Past the Trout, where laughter spills,
The living drink, the dead are still,
Yet some who walk that path by night,
See robes drift pale in lantern light.

To St Lawrence then they go,
Through drifting fog and moon’s faint glow,
Their steps unending, slow and stark,
The monks still walk the path through dark.

So if you walk that path at night,
And glimpse a flicker, pale as light,
Tread soft and still, don’t dare to talk,
The dead still walk the Monks Walk.

Lechlade Christmas Lights

In Lechlade town, the streets aglow,
The festive crowds began to grow.
A Lantern Parade, warm and bright,
Guided the crowd through soft twilight.

Children’s carols filled the square,
Soft notes rising through the air.
Santa’s Grotto, tucked away,
Buzzed with joy as kids made way.

Then came a sleigh and cheers rang out!
Santa and Mrs Claus, no doubt.
Bells jingled as they passed along,
The town alive with cheer and song.

Mulled wine flowed in steady streams,
The scent of spice, a Christmas dream.
Eyes turned toward the towering tree,
Its branches decked for all to see.

A switch was flipped, the town shone bright,
As Lechlade sparkled in the night.
Laughter echoed, lights alight,
A winter wonder, pure delight.

Buscot Bend

The rain won’t stop, the river swells,
At Buscot Bend, the water dwells.
The road is lost, the flood too deep,
Cars turn back where rivers creep.

Engines drown in the rising tide,
No way through, no place to hide.
The bend is gone, the path erased,
Only the river’s cold embrace.

And still it falls, the endless rain,
No hope of dry, no hope of drain.
The river holds what it has won
The road, the bend and everyone.

Our Library

Our library sits by the old market square,
A beacon of quiet, a cradle of care.
In Lechlade it stands, both humble and true,
A treasure for many, for me and for you.

Step through the door, leave the world at the gate,
A realm of new stories and dreams that await.
Each book is a window, a journey, a key,
To lands far beyond where the eye can yet see.

For children, it’s magic, a place to explore,
Where dragons and heroes leap out from the lore.
For others, a moment to pause and unwind,
To nurture the soul and awaken the mind.

It’s more than just books; it’s the hub of the town,
A shelter of solace when life wears you down.
It gathers us close, both the young and the old,
Where tales are beloved and new worlds unfold.

Here neighbours meet neighbours, connections are made,
A circle of friendship that cannot be swayed.
It offers us comfort, it offers us space,
A cornerstone carved in community’s grace.

So long may it stand, this refuge, this guide,
With stories to share and with doors open wide.
For Lechlade, it’s more than a building of stone,
It’s the soul of our town, the place we call home.

Isle of Lechlade

The rain fell heavy, cold and grey,
The streets dissolved, were swept away,
And all around, the waters crept,
Where land once lay, the river slept.

No more the path, no more the road,
Each step now sinks beneath the load
Of sodden fields and silent streets
A town undone by rain’s defeat.

Lechlade stands, a stranded place,
Cut off from every distant face,
The waters rise, and we remain,
Surrounded, waiting out the rain.

No way to leave, no way to know
How far the swollen rivers go,
We are adrift, though still on land,
As flooding claims what it can span.

A quiet grief hangs in the air
All roads have drowned, without repair,
And in this stillness, cold and wide,
The town is held, alone inside.

Sparks dance upon the crisp night air,
Crackling flames and a warm fire’s glare.
Fireworks bloom in bursts of light,
Painting the sky with colors bright.

Whistles, pops, and a dazzling show,
Crowds gather close in the ember’s glow.
On Bonfire Night, the sky ignites,
A symphony of sparks and lights.

All Hallows’ Eve

On All Hallows’ Eve, the moon shines bright,
Casting shadows that dance in the night.
Pumpkins grin with candlelit faces,
As whispers of magic fill secret spaces.

Ghosts glide softly through the chilly air,
With playful giggles, they linger there.
In costumes bright, both scary and sweet,
Children gather, their laughter a treat.

Sweets in baskets, a sugary haul,
From door to door, they heed the call.
Toffee apples and chocolate delights,
Mischief and joy mix in the twilight.

The trees are bare, the wind sings low,
While echoes of legends from long ago
Float through the night like a gentle breeze,
As spirits awaken with playful ease.

In the heart of the darkness, a flicker of light,
As friends come together, embracing the night.
So raise a toast to the veil that we weave,
On this hauntingly joyful All Hallows’ Eve.
