Meadowvale - a true crowdfunding project
This is in response to Board Stupid's new video as it touches on some really important trends in crowdfunding. They aren't the only ones now having these discussions.
Kickstarter was originally there so that creative people could bring an idea to fulfillment even if they didn't have a large amount of money to invest. The 'crowd' collectively believe in the product and collectively raise the capital to bring to manufacture. Yes there are risks, but that is also exciting, and collectively people bring projects across the line.
In addition, the hope would be that it funds well enough that the fledgling company can find their feet in the industry and become a viable company.
Kickstarter has been taken over a bit by huge companies launching games, games that if they just went to retail, would sell out.
Why? Because by using Kickstarter as a pre order system they know how many copies to print for the demand. That is a key unknown for any publisher, estimating how many copies of a game would be needed in a print run.
At the art festival I recently exhibited at, I had exactly this conversation with someone. I didn't think the none creative Kickstarter users would have been as aware, but it seems it has now been clocked by the general users.
What it does is push the genuine creative projects down the pecking order in the algorithm. So the genuine Kickstarter projects are less likely to succeed.
But there is a silver lining. As the person at the art festival showed, people are aware of this, and that may mean that hopefully in future, the genuine Kickstarter projects, like Meadowvale, like other games with a real creative identity, those games will hopefully filter through.
I'm putting it here just to raise awareness for people who do back games, or are thinking about it.
For me,.Meadowvale isn't going to happen without crowdfunding. I am lucky, I have a large group of people following who are very enthusiastic, I have a cross over with the art audience, a unique aesthetic, and a new take on a nature theme. Hopefully that will be enough....
