s well as David Bowie and Freddie Mercury (and other contemporary song makers)

I write on my life, my thoughts, the place that I live, the people I admire and the institutions I do not. Please do have a look through my poems here and I hope you find something that calls to you.

SPACE ANGEL

I lay there in bed and just as sleep falls,
A gust of wind blows so I jolt upright.
A sound like a singing Theremin calls
And my room is filled with a purple light.

Then the glow condenses and takes on form,
The source of this voice now becoming clear;
An angel clad in silver, tech-adorned,
Watching with too large eyes as she draws near.

She opens her mouth once again and sings
As she slowly lowers to embrace
My frozen form and does some cosmic things,
Kissing my lips without touching my face.

Then after what seems an eternity
I am left with only vague memory...

A Happy Birthday to Away With Words,
As today you are now 14 years old.
And just like humans with which age is shared
You refuse to listen when you are told:

“Poetry is for the Middle-Classes
And not meant to be inclusive of all”
Or, “Spoken-Word is not for the masses
As they wouldn't understand it at all”

No, you have been a beacon of respect
And welcomed all of us in your embrace.
And no matter the tone or dialect
You applaud difference with warmth and grace.

10 odd years ago was my first visit,
A nervous wreck wracked by doubt and the shakes,
Alone in your audience I would sit,
After, berating myself for any mistakes.

There have been great gaps in my times away
As my self-confidence would wax and wane
But when I've returned I can gladly say
That Jim seemed never to forget my name.

Since my first visit my life has changed much:
I found love, became a dad and my peace.
Also, life-long ills, Autism and such,
Now accepted, caused self-loathing to cease.

I have to owe part of my peace of mind
To this 'monthly, free, therapy event';
Filled with sympathetic, warm hearts that find
Humour and kinship when, on stage, I vent.

And of course our Circus of Creatives
Would not be if not for our Ringmaster;
Well loved for the care and support he gives
(Ensuring each night is no disaster).

I had better mention this about him:
He is Sky Arts Nominated you know.
I thought I would mention it, because, Jim
Has too much humility to do so...

So here is to Away With Words in Hull,
And the inimitable Jim Higo,
You have made all our lives more meaningful
And I wish you many happy years more!

Hasn't turned out bad considering I was sat at my computer, music playing through my monitor speaker and recording on my phone mic.

DEATH LAMENT OF THE LITTLE MOUSE
(a poetic response to https://www.facebook.com/reel/2769132756805300)

My life has been short compared to others
And now I lay here on this step to die.
I wonder if my sisters and brothers,
Upon hearing this, would lament or cry?

Life was hard, ever ruled by doubt and fear,
Now, dying, I lay and I bake in the Sun.
Is there anyone that would shed a tear
Over my co**se now that my life is done?

I am visited by a nice lady
Who checks on me, even though I am dead.
She seems to grin like someone that's crazy,
More so now that I am just tail and head.

Finally, in a box, she placed my skull,
And with this act my whole purpose seems full.

This Shakespearean sonnet was inspired by, and is a response to, fellow poet & friend, Andie Cropper's 'Little Mouse' poem which can be found on her dedicated poetry page: Potato Salad Arts
