Battalions

Battalions Slimy, soulful and heavy. Not recommended for people with pacemakers. All enquiries contact: battali It’s a metal album. But, you couldn’t call it groove metal.

Doing their stuff since 2010 - that stuff probably being best described as party sludge - Battalions have carved out a space in the scene that only they could fill, and one that they could fill with the bounciest hooks imaginable wherever it is you put them. Six years in, Battalions were ready to burst with their peppy grimness, sparking a three year streak of consecutive releases.

2016’s Nothing

to Lose and the following year’s Moonburn introduced the wider scene to an apoplectic, yet somehow upbeat, sound all of their own; storming out of the gate ready to f**k up the world, all the while with a spring in their step. Between Moonburn and their next album, Battalions settled into the four-piece lineup we know today. Late 2018 saw Battalions release the chunkiest album of the year in Forever Marching Backwards [APF016], which, like previous releases, was recorded at SkyHammer Studios. It’s also an album that is brimming with pure groove. Again, it’s out and out party sludge; something that Battalions do better than anybody on this planet or the next. From the power behind the drumkit, to Phil Wilkinson’s growls into the mic, to the flanking attacks of Matt Dennett on bass and Peter Cross on guitar, there’s an energy to Battalions that makes them seem unstoppable, and aside from catching them live, Forever Marching Backwards is a perfect encapsulation of that energy. Anywhere Battalions show, a party comes with them. So make sure you’re marching backwards with Battalions any chance you get

Bloody hell, look at this line up we're playing later this year. Excited to play Abyssal Festival and make our first appearance in Southampton!

Behold, our full lineup! We’ve been really, really excited to announce this.

AHAB - At long last, we're proud to present THE legendary Nautik Funeral Doom band as our headliner - a UK exclusive for 2026! Mighty, weighty and disturbingly spacious riffs crash over, as waves, while nautical tragedies settle like skeletons on the seabed. So very, very slow. Ishmael said it himself - "As for me, I am tormented with an everlasting itch for things remote. I love to sail forbidden seas, and land on barbarous coasts."

Codespeaker - Scottish post-metal crew taking words like 'soaring' and 'expansive' to violent new places. Meditative, yet merciless.

Noisepicker - Experimental blues, doom and punk collisions conceived by Earls of Mars frontman (and Orange Goblin bassist) Harry Armstrong.

Battalions - Groovy by way of vile sludge, hard rockin' riffs and wraithlike shrieking. What happens when Hull freezes over?

Boa Resa - Starting as we mean to go on. Funereal pace and horrid, choking atmospherics from a nice bunch of London guys we met after seeing Bongripper last year.

They’ll be joining Psychlona, Five The Hierophant, Witchsorrow, Moloch and Grim Harvest at Papillon this year - see you there.

We're heading to Playing Aloud to record our 5th album next month. To celebrate, they're also returning to booking shows, so we get to play in a church in Lincoln!

Let's have a riff party 🔥🤙

The return of Playing Aloud presents: Battalions + For I the Badger + Mildlincolnsludge

Playing their own brand of “party sludge”, Battalions have been spreading heavy grooves and big sludgy riffs from over the Humber since 2010.

Their “absolute sludge metal bangers” will have you dancing and nodding your head in equal measure. Bringing an equally energetic live show, this is not to be missed!! 🤩🤘

Friday 05 June | Doors @ 19:00
