🧸✨ Happy National Teddy Bear Day! ✨🧸

Today the whole world celebrates the one companion that never goes out of fashion. The bear on the shelf, the one who travelled with you through childhood, the one you found at a fair and simply could not leave behind. 💛

And there is no better day to look ahead, because our next big celebration is almost here.

In just under a fortnight the Hugglets TEDDIES Festival opens its doors for the very first time at the The Nations Experience Capital NEC Birmingham. 🎉 A brand-new home, brilliantly easy to reach by train, plane or car (free parking!), and a full day of bears waiting to be discovered. Antique treasures, contemporary artist bears, clothes and accessories, with prices from a few pounds to well over £1,000.

There are also mohair, glass eyes, joints and patterns for anyone who has ever thought about stitching their very own bear, and the makers themselves are right there to point you in the right direction. 🪡

Experienced collectors will find plenty to hunt for, and if you are simply curious, come along anyway. A day among thousands of bears is a lovely thing, whether you take one home or not.

So today, give your bear an extra hug. And then mark the date. 🗓️

🪡🧸 Twenty-nine years, and every stitch by hand 🧸🪡
Kerren Morris has been making bears from her home in Pudsey, near Leeds, for 29 years – and in all that time she has never reached for a sewing machine. Every K M Bear is completely hand-sewn, worked from her own original patterns, and finished as a one-of-a-kind. 💛

Each bear is five-way jointed and weighted with heavy polyester filling and pellets, giving them that satisfying, settled feel in the arms. Their clothes are made by hand too, so no two characters ever turn out quite alike. ✨

Bears from have been adopted all around the world, and Kerren is thrilled to be bringing them to the NEC.

Last weekend Hugglets organiser Sebastian attended the Japan Teddy Bear with Friends Convention in Tokyo, organised by 日本テディベア協会［公式］ the Japan Teddy Bear Association. 🧸 It was a pleasure and an honour for him to sit on the competition jury and to present some of the awards. 🏆

Two things in particular, though they may be no more than his individual perception. The first is the range of styles on show ✨ There seems to be more variety than before, including techniques and ideas he had not seen at all until now, and a level of creativity and craftsmanship that was striking even among the newcomers.

The second is the growing interest in showing this excellence in the United Kingdom. 🇬🇧 Sebastian had a great many conversations about our fairs in Birmingham and London. Interest in Japanese teddy bear art is considerable and still growing, and it is fair to say that the UK is waiting for these artists.

🧸 A first visit, all the way from California 🧸
Irina Baxter is crossing the Atlantic for her very first Hugglets Festival, and she is bringing some unusual company with her. ✨

The characters of Plush Souls of California are all one of a kind, handmade in her studio with original clothing and details that reward a proper look. Gently aged teddy bears sit alongside wonderfully eccentric rabbits, rats and other unlikely souls 🐀🐰 – each one arriving with its own personality and a quiet sense of history behind it.

Some of them have gone on to lead second lives in her illustrated stories and books. 📖

A brand-new name at Hugglets, and one very much worth seeking out at the NEC.

🇯🇵🐱 All the way from Japan – and full of clever ideas 🐱🇯🇵
Mika Fujita is travelling from Japan to Birmingham, bringing with her a cat unlike any other on the floor. Its double-jointed neck allows a remarkable range of head movement, and hidden inside sits a cat growler, so it announces itself the moment you tip it. 😺

is best known for her signature six-jointed bears, but her range extends far beyond them: traditional teddy bears alongside a charming tape-measure series featuring bears, dogs and cats. ✨ Engineering and affection, working hand in hand.

🪡🧸 Handsewn in Staffordshire 🧸🪡
Mandy Cooke stitches every one of her bears by hand, working in mohair and plush from her studio in Staffordshire. It is a craft she came to a few years ago and has clearly never looked back from – the pleasure she takes in making them comes through in the finished characters. 💛

Her bears will be joined at the NEC by a company of bunnies 🐰, and all of them, she promises, are arriving in the hope of a great many hugs. Unhurried, hand-stitched and made with genuine warmth. Stop by and say hello.

On this day in 1921, a small teddy bear was given to Christopher Robin Milne for his first birthday. Nobody could have guessed that this one bear would go on to become one of the most beloved characters in the English language, wandering the Hundred Acre Wood with Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo and Tigger in the stories his father wrote for him. ✨

Here is the lovely thing: every legendary bear began life as somebody's birthday present. A gift, a name, a friendship. At the Hugglets TEDDIES Festival, you can meet the artists and makers who are creating exactly those bears today, one stitch at a time, waiting for the right person to come along. 🧸

✨🧸 Bears with a soul ✨🧸
Lena Anthony makes companions rather than ornaments. Born in Ukraine and now a teddy bear artist with a devoted following, she creates each from the finest materials: soft mohair, English glass eyes, a few carefully measured grams of metal granules for just the right weight in the hand. 💛

And then there is everything else that goes in – the patience, the attention, the sheer affection – which is rather harder to list but impossible to miss. 🪡

There is something quietly emotional about these bears. They do not simply sit on a shelf looking pretty. They seem to reach straight for the heart, carrying you back to a place of childhood wonder and warmth.

Come and hold one. That is really the only way to understand it.
