Welcome to One Dog at a Time.
There are some dogs who become unforgettable parts of people’s lives, and others who live and disappear without anyone ever learning their name.
The dogs I discovered through this project were destined to be the latter.
I created One Dog at a Time after learning that millions of street dogs across Morocco are to be killed ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, in an effort to “cleanse” the streets before the tournament. The World Cup will be watched and celebrated by millions of people around the world, and because of that, I believe the lives affected by it are our responsibility too.
My own dogs stood beside me through hospital admissions and recovery. Since then, I have spoken to countless people with similar stories, showing me how deeply a dog can change somebody’s life.
These dogs are no different. Given the chance, any one of them could simply have been somebody’s dog — offering the same comfort and companionship.
One Dog at a Time is a collection of illustrated portraits and stories inspired by real rescue dogs cared for by SFT Animal Sanctuary. Through the project, I hope to raise awareness of the dogs behind the statistics and encourage people to look beyond the word “stray”, recognising each dog as an individual with their own personality, experiences and value.
SFT is a non-profit animal sanctuary in Tangier, Morocco, run by Sally and her team. Alongside rescuing and caring for street dogs, they work towards creating lasting change and more humane alternatives to culling through initiatives such as TNVR — Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate and Release.
Originally created as my final pre-degree project, One Dog at a Time was presented alongside an exhibition of the original portraits at my end-of-year graduate show, where it was recognised with both the Best in Show and Highly Commended awards. The project has since also helped me become a regional finalist in the NMTF Young Traders competition, allowing me to share its message with a wider audience.
Through this page, I will be sharing the stories of some of the dogs cared for by SFT, the artwork they have inspired, behind-the-scenes glimpses of the project, and updates on the One Dog at a Time book and campaign.
You may spot small bumble bees hidden throughout the illustrations. They appear as symbols of hope, resilience and the belief that even the smallest act of compassion can change the course of a life.
Thank you for reading, following the dogs’ stories and helping them to be seen as individuals rather than statistics.
Because change rarely happens all at once. Sometimes it begins with one small act of kindness, one dog at a time.
The book is now available to pre-order, with 5% of the profit from every copy sold being donated to SFT Animal Sanctuary. You can also donate directly through the campaign, where donations will help support the sanctuary’s ongoing rescue, treatment and humane welfare work.
If you’re not able to pre-order or donate, even simply sharing this post would mean so much and could help the campaign reach someone who can.
