Ayrshire Artists || Alison Thomas Artist
As part of my VACMA (Visual Artist &Makers Award) project based around Irvine and its harbourside I’ve been researching some of the vessels in the Scottish Maritime Museum collection. ‘Venus’ is one of my favourites, she is a traditional fishing vessel known as a ‘fourareen’ made from driftwood collected on the remote island of Foula, part of the Shetland archipelago. I love how she’s made from driftwood! Something I’ve been using in my work lately.
This A2 (42 x 59 cm) pastel drawing is a study of how she may have looked on the water and I’ve enjoyed playing with various colours on the wood detail. The three fish on the sail are meant to represent the types of fish that she may have been used to catch such as cod, herring & plaice. I’m sure the waters were much more plentiful in 1898 when she was built so I decided to make them quite ghostly looking. I’ve tried to portray her on calm waters on a sunny day, really into yellow at the moment - a colour I’ve always avoided but now loving it!
This original drawing is available for sale for £90, unframed. Please pm me if you are interested. Thanks!

Exhibition | Courtyard Studios (Alison Thomas)
Welcome to the Virtual Courtyard Studios Annual Exhibition of Group Work. For the past six weeks we've been showcasing new artwork from ten of these fantastic and varied artists.
Our final artist is Alison Thomas Artist.
"I graduated in 1996 from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. Since then I have grown as an artist and teacher especially during the 20 years spent in my studio at Irvine harbourside. From here I produce paintings and handmade felt in addition to running regular art classes for children and adults.
In my journey as an artist I have covered a wide range of themes and there are some I find I keep returning to. Ships, buildings and nature are common subjects in my work although I also spent a few years exploring the circus."
All artwork featured today is for sale. Contact the artist or email us at
[email protected] for more info.
Please join us next Wednesday for a video of the full exhibition!
