So sad to hear the news of the craft courses closing at Edinburgh College of Art. The erosion of these training pathways is destroying the future of making and our cultural heritage in Scotland, while also weakening the wider craft communities who rely on trained makers, shared knowledge, and strong educational routes. Our heritage crafts are dying, and this is another major blow.

The University of Edinburgh recently announced their decision to close three highly successful undergraduate programmes at ECA: Jewellery and Silversmithing, Textiles and Performance Costume.
These courses represent the remainder of ECA’s undergraduate degrees in craft disciplines and teach vital making skills, alongside nurturing creative imagination and design expertise.
These closures will devastate educational opportunities for future generations of professional makers and designers. As young people look towards a sustainable A.I. resistant career, the closure of these courses denies Scotland's creative talent the skills and training required to build successful futureproofed careers in craft and design.
