Spring has arrived but in the studio I am still playing around in the snow. 😁 I’m a bit obsessed with the colour and temperature of painting white! Two studies of the same scene, one on light paper and one on dark.

Getting prepped for the annual January daily painting challenge. I love taking part and seeing what other people are creating. Posting work keeps me accountable too. My aim is to do something each day, not always a full painting but sketchbook planning or studies and hopefully a bit more plein air if my fingers can manage the cold. Whatever I can make time for after work and on my days off from work. It could be anything from a whole day to 30 minutes. If you haven’t done much creatively recently then this can be a perfect place to get into the habit again. ☺️

Last day of NEOS today. Find some local studios near you or take a trip further afield and plan a trail. Whether you are looking to buy, or just get inspiration, there is such a variety of artists and craft makers to see who are ready to talk about their process. I’ve had a lovely week meeting lots of new people and sharing a space with FeltingMad and Shearing Crafts.☺️

Delighted to hear that these 2 little paintings have been sold at the Benchmark exhibition in London. I painted these last year on a sunny September day and I can still recall how it felt, painting in the sun with barn swallows swooping around my head. I felt totally immersed and peaceful. Painting outdoors is an education about light and colour in the landscape but it is also just the most wonderful experience. I hope they are off to a home as a pair and that the buyer enjoys living with them as much as I enjoyed making them.

Although I’ve not posted everyday of the 31/31 challenge, I have been busy behind the scenes with the winter tree obsession. Winter is the best time to study trees. Most are variations on the same images as I attempt to get what I’m after, trying different papers and approaches. Pastel on Lux, Uart and la carte.

A slightly more successful plein air session. I think I managed an hour! The sun helped keep my hands warm and it was just my toes that felt the bite. I like how plein air painting in these conditions forces you to work faster and looser. These are not perhaps anything I’ll be framing, more studies that help me better understand the interaction of light and colour. One of my goals for 2025 is more of this, painting in nature. ☺️

In my efforts to not be just a fair weather plein air painter I decided to try some painting in the snow. Hmm…was challenging painting with frozen fingers.🤣 Day 2/31
