We are delighted to announce ‘A Moorland for All’, a group exhibition presented as part of photoILKLEY 2026: HUMAN : NATURE.

Produced in association with Ilkley Camera Club, the exhibition brings together the work of John Fontana, Eugenio Farri, Neil Bland and Mark Waddington, celebrating the enduring relationship between Ilkley Moor and the people who walk it, cherish it and find solace within it.

Today’s featured artist is John Fontana.

An Addingham-based photographer, John spent his career as a GP in nearby Silsden before dedicating more of his time to photography. Working primarily in monochrome with both digital and vintage film cameras, his photographs reveal the timeless character of the local landscape.

John’s evocative black-and-white images capture the moor’s changing light, dramatic rock formations and quiet atmosphere. Whether documenting its natural beauty or introducing subtle human narratives, as in Prayer Meeting(pictured), his work invites us to pause, reflect and experience this remarkable landscape with fresh eyes.

📣 Exhibition Announcement
We are delighted to announce 'The Good River' by Benjamin Statham, presented as part of photoILKLEY 2026 and this year’s theme, HUMAN:NATURE.
First shown at last year’s festival, 'The Good River' has since evolved into a deeply personal journey along the River Wharfe, exploring place, memory, fatherhood, grief, diagnosis and the changing natural world.
Walking becomes both ritual and method: a way of listening to the river, and to a landscape shaped by erosion, flood, collapse and renewal.

📸 The countdown to photoILKLEY 2026 begins.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing the exhibitions, workshops, talks and events that make up this year’s festival programme, all inspired by our 2026 theme: HUMAN:NATURE.

First up is a chance to see Ilkley differently.

Join photographer Louise Rayner for a relaxed Phone Photography Walking Workshop and discover how slowing down, looking closely and paying attention can transform the photographs you make with the camera already in your pocket.

Together, participants will explore Ilkley’s streets, green spaces and hidden details while learning practical techniques for composition, light, observation and visual storytelling.

We loved catching up with Theo, one of last year’s Young Photographer Competition winners, and hearing what being part of photoILKLEY meant to him.

The competition is such an important part of the festival: a chance to celebrate young people’s creativity, curiosity and way of seeing the world.

This year’s Young Photographer Competition is still open, but not for much longer. If you are aged 19 or under, you can submit up to three photographs for the chance to be part of photoILKLEY 2026.

Deadline: Wednesday 3 June 1 pm

We cannot wait to see what you create.
