Cambridge Dictionary defines "Sportsmanship" as "behaviour in sport that is fair and shows respect to the other players", a gentleman of sport if you will. Back in 1930, Seth Senior and Sons built The Sportsman to improve the image of pubs and attract a more respectable clientele hence the name "Sportsman". This is the sort of clientele that we are blessed to still serve today ❤

In the gents toilets, you may have noticed the original hand painted tiles that show a variety of sports, a proud part of our history and name that we are honoured to keep in such good condition.

Easily one of the beers of the year (so far), Vocation Naughty and Nice Imperial Stout.
This was brewed back in November 2021 and has had plenty of time in the cask to develop and mature into a properly magnificent beer.
A rare treat and incredible on cask.

Last but not least of the three special Belgian beer deliveries from the other day, St Feuillien Quadruple Oaked 🤤

A complex malty aroma with nuances of Madeira wine and candied fruit as well as an intense touch of fermentation esters (fruity banana-like aroma). The infusion of chips of French oak during aging enriches the beer with woody nuances of vanilla, caramel and coconut, and blends harmoniously with a slight hoppy bouquet. The palate is long and powerful with a robust body. The bitterness is present but sweet. maceration oak shavings highlights the natural qualities of the product, fullness in the mouth and smoothness. The selection of special malts highlights the chocolate side mixed with nuances of coconut.

The second of our new batch of cellar beers, here we have Gouden Carolus Cuvee van de Keizer Blue Imperial Dark 😍

Every year on the 24th of February, Gouden Carolus celebrate the birth of Charles Quint and in doing so, brew a special beer in limited edition called Cuvée of the Emperor. This exceptional beer is a special version of the Golden Carolus Classic, with an enriched taste pallet and mysterious aromas added. The caramelised malts and its 11% Alc. Vol. give the Cuvée of the Emperor the warm roundness of wine together with the refreshing taste of beer. It is imperially crowned with a special cork so it can be preserved for a long period of time with a constant cellar temperature of 12° C. An imperial beer to cherish and enjoy in moderation.

23/03/2023

The "Grande Réserve" barrel fermented is an exceptional beer that benefits from triple fermentation and extended maturing in barrels. Unfiltered, unpasteurised, this beer has an incomparable rounded, wooden flavour.

In 1862, the monks of Chimay began to brew their first beer according to the monastic traditions of natural brewing and top fermentation followed by refermentation in the bottle. The second fermentation, specific to Chimay, still defines today the original personality of the beer, true to itself since the prototype brew released for the Easter holidays in 1948.

That same year, Father Theodore isolates the yeast, unchanged since then, which gives Chimay its unique taste. The recipe, in turn, is identical to that of its origins in 1862: it is 160 years old! Since 1948, the brewery has not left the enclosure of the Cistercian abbey.

Chimay beers, today enjoyed well beyond the borders, are still brewed there, under supervision of the monks. And if technology has, of course, evolved, it is in support of the quality and the age-old tradition, while preserving the unique taste of Chimay beers with simplicity.

It's Thursday... It's DRAM CLUB DAY! This weeks offer is on Smokehead Unfiltered, a smoky, nutty Islay single malt with aromas of ginger, vanilla, thick smoke, burnt earth and rich stout that fill the nose. The palate holds notes of walnuts, almond flakes, dark chocolate, black smoke, pepper and earthy peat that linger in the finish.

Time for another Sportsman history lesson. You could be forgiven for overlooking these humble little buttons in the snug rooms, they're small, easy to miss, but they are a great example of this pubs great history!

Decades ago, these bells would be pressed to summon the bar staff to the private rooms to take an order. There are very few examples of these bells remaining and even fewer of bells in this good of a condition. Although these bells no longer work, we still keep the tradition of table service alive every Sunday during the quiz with Kane putting on the apron and taking orders from all you thirsty quiz teams 🍻

22/03/2023

Education is important, but beer is importanter! Some wise words indeed from one of the many many bars that were sampled in Ryan's "market research" trip to Prague recently. So whilst this history lesson on Oud Beersel Brewery is important, swinging by the Sportsman to crack open a bottle of this wonderful Framboise is importanter!

The story of Oud Beersel dates back to 1882 in the town of Beersel where the son of local brewer Henri Vandervelden, married the daughter of village shop and café owner Jeromius Hofmans. This would go on to marry the café and the brewery under the Vandervelden name for the next four generations until 2002!

Henri Vandervelden, who at the time was working for Brouwerij De Kroon, started construction of his own brewery with the help of local brick fabricators. His experience at De Kroon, that at the time specialized in lambics, gave him the necessary skills to start his own brewery. When Henri’s son Egidius married Catharina Hofmans, the groundwork was laid to expand the Hofmans’ family farm and turn it into a brewery. In 1922, Egidius set out to update and upgrade equipment in order to begin producing beers. In the meantime, Egidius’ younger brother Pierre Vandervelden continued his father’s blending and brewing business until shortly after World War II ended.

The brewery that Egidius set up was not initially a lambic brewery, though it produced lambic-esque beers. In many ways, Egidius was the first to establish a non-traditional lambic. By 1930, he was the first to produce a sweetened, pasteurized kriek in bottles with a crown and a cap. Lambic was not produced at Oud Beersel until shortly before World War II started. The production was halted when, at the order of the occupying forces, brewers were not permitted to use wheat in their beers. As a replacement, Egidius began to brew a low-alcohol beer using ground-up and dried sugar beet and some hops. Egidius passed away at a young age in 1953, leaving the brewery to his son Henri Vandervelden II.
