Photographic Portrait Call Out: Be a part of LGBTQ+ History

The UK’s first ever National Pride March took place in Huddersfield on 4th July 1981.

To mark the 40th anniversary, a series of arts and archive events will take place until Autumn 2022.

Internationally renowned photographer Ajamu X will take a series of portraits of people who marched in 1981 and people who are part of the LGBTQ+ community in and around Huddersfield today.

The portraits will be part of a Street Exhibition along of the original Pride '81 route. The full set will be displayed at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Summer 2022. They will then become a part of the permanent collection at Huddersfield Art Gallery.

The team would love to hear from women who want to be photographed (they have been delighted to already have a lot of male volunteers, but women are under-represented at the moment).

If you are interested, please email Stephen M Hornby ([email protected]) or Jade Graham ([email protected]) with a simple head and shoulders shot of yourself and they will be in touch.

We would like to invite you to the opening of Huddersfield Art Gallery: Unit 7 on Saturday 6th November at 2pm.

We will launch our temporary new space with the return of the Contemporary British Painting Prize Exhibition 2021.

Over 1,000 artists applied and the exhibition will feature artworks by 15 shortlisted artists.

The prize judges are Matthew Burrows MBE (painter and founder of the Artist Support Pledge), Julie Lomax (CEO of a-n Artists Information Company) and Grant Scanlan (Huddersfield Museums Manager).

Unit 7 is located in the Piazza Shopping Centre opposite the entrance to the Huddersfield Library & Art Gallery building.

We were delighted to hear we have received funding thanks to the government’s so that we can continue to be here for you and .

We’ll be supporting Kirklees to help our communities recover from the impacts of Covid-19 through outdoor activity, community heritage outreach, and working with schools to help children rediscover learning about our history and heritage.

The pandemic has created some challenges in how we look after and care for our collections; this funding will help to safeguard them for future generations to enjoy, and allow us to improve our digital offer so that our collections and services are reaching a wider range of audiences

To celebrate their Silver Wedding Anniversary, the Sheards (who built Bagshaw Museum as a private mansion) hosted a magnificent costume ball in March 1882 - guests dressed up as Tudor gentlemen, a furry white cat and even included the old woman who lived in a shoe...

Since we can't get dressed up for a Saturday night out at the moment, we thought it would be fun to create our best historical costumes, using the Sheards' party as inspiration.

So we're asking everyone to get creative with that stash of toilet paper, all of those online order boxes and to find a use for those clothes we've not quite given to the charity shop yet! Remember to tag us in your recreations so we can share on our page! We'll be sharing the originals and your best efforts throughout December.

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that our judges this year are:
- Matthew Burrows MBE, painter & creator of
- Julie Lomax CEO of A-N
- Grant Scanlan curator Huddersfield Art Gallery

Matthew Burrows MBE (born 1971) is a contemporary British painter and founder of Artist Support Pledge, a global movement in support of artists and makers. Matthew lives and works in the UK and is represented by Vigo Gallery London. Burrows speaks of painting as a form of subsistence, dependent on and arising from the ground at his feet. Through the layering of colour and line, Burrows creates images that invite mediation and a slow unraveling of space and experience. He speaks of his work as ‘one of dwelling and ritual, a process of mythologizing, of drawing meaning from the particularities of the environment and his movement in and through it’.
