I moved the paint quickly around the surface, lost in the music, it was hard to control and reach the moment of knowing when to freeze and stop the energy flowing on to the canvas. Unplug yourself from Material Things

We are plugged into the world. We consume more than we need. We have to stop think, breathe. Filled with a punk ethic, breaking down the traditional line to a scrawl, break free from the traditional concept of beauty. Unplug yourself from material things.
This was an experiment: a loose juxtaposition of the freedom of punk but the tightness and sharpness of playing. I painted while listening to the Erase Errata album Night Life – it has a punk esthetic but really tight hypnotic style. Really bombastic erratic and sharp. The title is trying to tell people to stop buying things they don’t need. Replacing the unbroken. The painting has a ‘repaired’ feel to it. Not clean. As if its been repaired over time.

When I finish a painting, sometimes the painting is not the end. I will take areas of the painting, or the ideo of the painting and turn it on its head, I digitally remix it and create new art. The digital remixes are in very limited editions of 10. Once 10 have been sold then the file is destroyed. Only a small file copy is kept. This is the digital remix of my painting, 'If we forget your Past we cannot understand your future."

Dex Hannon is an artist, photographer, writer and one quarter of the Broken Toy Company. He was born and studied in Manchester and now resides in Yorkshire.
He works at Sopa Creativa Art Studios in Huddersfield. Dex Hannon goes where the idea takes him. The idea drives the choice of medium. He paints. He makes and use sounds. He takes photos and shapes sentences into interesting stories.
He is influenced by the music he listens to as he works as much as he is by the artists Mark Rothko and Gerhard Richter. An abstract expressionist, working in paint, digital and sound. The choice medium is driven by the idea.
Mixing techniques and bold choices he creates a battle between foreground and background. He works in rapid strokes, letting the moment and music influence movements of the brush. Interlocking raw strokes repeating to form the illusion of depth. Creating intense, emotional paintings.
Sometimes the painting will be the end, sometimes the painting is ‘remixed'. Using photographs and digital software, he will remix the original painting. The new digital work, will reimagine or reinterpret the original work. The concept of a remix always interested him. A song is released with a remix as a B-side. Sometimes the remix would become bigger than the original song. On its own the remix could not exist. It owes its existence to that original song.
