Mindful Makers Club at The Weavers Shed

Mindful Makers Club has had the privilege of continuing our workshops at The Weavers Shed thank you so much for providing us with such a lovely, regular space! 💛

I’d love to get some feedback from parents and carers about the best time for Saturday workshops throughout October.

I’m thinking it could be lovely to create a little space where young people can enjoy a wellbeing-focused creative workshop with me upstairs, while parents/carers have the opportunity to relax, enjoy a meal or grab a drink from the weavers.

What Saturday time would work best for you?

🕚 Late morning — e.g. 11am–12.30pm
🕐 Early afternoon — e.g. 1pm–2.30pm
🕒 Mid-afternoon — e.g. 3pm–4.30pm
💬 Or another time?

Please pop your preferred time in the comments, your feedback will really help me plan the October sessions around what works best for families.

Thank you!

What a busy week mindful makers club has had working with Parkwood Community Project and Ruddi’s By Ruddi’s Retreat

Our young people created their very own journals while learning about journaling and how it can support our wellbeing. I was so impressed by their knowledge and understanding of emotions, including how different emotions can feel and show up in our bodies.

Journaling was definitely a popular activity, so keep an eye out for another journaling workshop! Young people who attended this session will also have the opportunity to come back and continue adding to their journals and completing more pages.

We also got creative by completing our clay mirrors and designing our own tote bags. With our older young people, we explored self-esteem and discussed how society can influence the way we see ourselves and how we feel about our appearance and identity.

It was brilliant to see creativity, honest conversations and self-reflection all coming together.

A huge well done to all the young people who took part you should be proud of yourselves!

Keep an eye out for upcoming October workshops ❤️

A huge apology to everyone who has booked onto my Clay & Journal sessions! 🙏

I’ve accidentally mixed up the sessions and I’m so sorry for any confusion this may have caused. I’m just starting out, and every mistake is a lesson for me thank you all so much for your patience and understanding while I find my feet! ❤️

Just to confirm: the workshop on 25th August will be a Journaling Workshop.

If you were expecting the Clay Workshop next week and would like to cancel your booking, please pop me a message and I’ll be happy to help.

That being said, we had such a fantastic time today creating our clay mirror masterpieces!

We explored our positive qualities, the things we enjoy, and how we could bring these ideas together through our clay mirrors. We also talked about how it’s completely normal to experience both positive and negative thoughts, and got creative by making little creatures including a negative snail to help us identify and explore those thoughts.

Thank you again for your patience, support and understanding. It really means a lot as I’m getting started on this journey! ❤️🙏

Thank you to Ruddi’s By Ruddi’s Retreat for allowing me to use their fabulous venue!

Selective mutism in children isn’t simply being “shy” or refusing to speak.

For some children, anxiety can make speaking feel impossible in certain situations even when they can talk comfortably at home or with people they trust.

With understanding, patience, and the right support from families, schools, and professionals, children with selective mutism can make progress.

Most importantly, listen to the child, reduce pressure, celebrate small steps, and help them feel safe.

Situational speech loss, not shyness.
The words may be there. The body cannot get them out in that moment.

Selective mutism is an anxiety disorder. A child may speak comfortably in some places, such as at home, but become unable to speak in other settings like school, shops, or around unfamiliar people.

It is not refusal, rudeness, or a lack of understanding. 💜

What it can look like, speaking at home but not at school, whispering, nodding, pointing, or using gestures, freezing when expected to answer, avoiding eye contact or looking tense under pressure, and seeming "fine" until communication is demanded.

What's happening in the body, a social demand arises, anxiety rises, a freeze or threat response activates, and speech shuts down. When the nervous system shifts into protection, speech can become temporarily inaccessible.

Social demand ➔ Anxiety rises ➔ Freeze / threat response ➔ Speech shuts down

When the nervous system shifts into protection, speech can become temporarily inaccessible.

Selective mutism is not shyness, stubbornness, defiance, low intelligence, or a child "just being difficult." Selective mutism is real anxiety, a situational loss of speech, often misunderstood, responsive to support, and a reason to reduce pressure.

For Parents Reading This
Watching your child speak effortlessly, laugh, and chatter at home, only to see them freeze into complete silence at school or in public settings, can be heartbreaking and bewildering. It helps to understand that selective mutism is not a choice, bad behavior, or stubbornness. The term "selective" is a clinical label meaning situational, not voluntary—your child's autonomic nervous system is detecting a high level of social threat, triggering a protective freeze response that physically locks their vocal cords.

Supporting your child begins with taking all pressure off spoken output. Reassure them that it is okay if their words get stuck, and actively model non-verbal ways to participate, such as nodding, pointing, or using AAC tools. When you eliminate the expectation to speak and create a low-demand, low-arousal environment, you remove the performance anxiety that keeps their nervous system locked in protection.

For Professionals Reading This
In educational, therapeutic, and clinical settings, selective mutism is frequently misdiagnosed as oppositional defiance, extreme shyness, or severe cognitive delay. Polyvagal theory and anxiety research demonstrate that situational speech loss represents an involuntary dorsal vagal/sympathetic threat response. Demanding eye contact, putting a child "on the spot" in front of peers, or withholding rewards until a child speaks exacerbates anxiety and reinforces the physical freeze response.

Trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming care requires multidisciplinary teams to adopt a low-demand approach. Educators and clinicians should validate all non-verbal modalities (pointing, writing, digital AAC, gesture), establish predictable environmental routines, and implement gradual exposure strategies centered on play and psychological safety. School staff must coordinate closely with parents to ensure consistency across home and educational settings, prioritizing emotional security over verbal performance.

Support, Don't Test: Focus on the message and connection, not vocal output!

Many children improve with early, supportive, and understanding intervention! 💛

Mindful makers club will be here! Come and get creative with us 💕💕

What a fantastic session with the youth club!

Today we got creative making our own colourful squishes including Oreo squishy and dumplings! With plenty of imagination, mess and teamwork along the way. It was wonderful to see everyone expressing themselves and trying new ideas.

We also had some brilliant conversations about how squishies can be used as a tool to help us regulate our emotions, reduce stress and anxiety, improve focus, and provide comfort when we’re feeling overwhelmed. It was wonderful to see everyone sharing ideas and recognising the different ways creativity can support our wellbeing.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined in and made the workshop so much fun. I can’t wait to see you all at the next Mindful Makers Club session! 💛

Keep an eye out for mindful makers club next animal squishy workshop!!
