Mainstage & Video.

Lockdown gave me the opportunity to tackle the problem of rear projection videos for specific shows.

We all know MS doesn’t support video sync. And during gigs you simply can’t mess about. This means if you have videos, they must to be cut to your backing track and start at the same time.

If you’re like me (operating on the budget from hell), a separate video server is out of the question... and if you have bags of cash, a powerful server offers video lock, which makes the case for moving audio to it, which flies in the face of a million brilliant reasons to keep the audio in MS such as processing locked effects, running multiple stems or a million other reasons relating to your on FOH audio / monitoring / in ear connections (if you know what you’re doing).

So the task is to trigger video playback a cheaper device, like an iPad; without sacrificing inputs and other connections you may already have allocated.

Now, I’m not l pretending this is an ideal solution. But it’ll do for now until Apple integrate Video into Mainstage.

My answer is use MS to send a wireless midi CC command to an iPad, and on that iPad is an app, listening for such a command. And yes, it’s working. The current challenge is load latency, where the iPad needs a few seconds to load the video on my 6 year old old IPad Mini 2. But nevertheless, it actually works.

If you want specific assistance in setting this up, reach out.

One of the MainStage hurdles I cleared (relatively) early on was understanding the relationship between the 'Layout', 'Edit' and 'Perform' panels.

The trick is understanding the 'temporal' difference between Layout and Edit. Layout is static and set, edit is precisely the opposite.

It's kind of confusing but difficult to think of another way Apple could have phrased it.

In short 'Layout' is a technical picture of your physical rig, plus the main devices you choose to implement. Any keyboards, input devices, buttons, switches and then the MS goodies like playback windows, patch lists (another confusing term). The layout is the same throughout the show. anything you want to physically use or is core to the show goes in here.

The 'Edit' window however is how each of these devices changes on a patch to patch (for now lets call that 'song' to 'song') basis.

So your Keyboards, Mics, footswitches, VU meters, wav display control, faders, drum pads and whatever else are created in the 'Layout' Panel and this is where MS learns the connections between these virtual 'things' and the real physical device.

The Edit window is where you set what each of these do for each song.

Example... a Keyboard is created in layout. You connect the keyboard to the mac and MS learns where that keyboard is and how to listen to the notes on it (notice i said notes, not physical keyboard). All at the 'Layout' level.

But you will almost certainly want to have there capability of connecting any combination of layers and splits of any internal, AU/AST or external midi instruments to that "keyboard" ... and differently for each song (patch).

Same for any button, any fader, pad, pedal input on that physical device already not connected.

That is the basic of that. But as you develop your skills you will learn that this level of control affords you extraordinary flexibility. Even to the point of sending wireless midi commands to other devices.

If you are interested in learning more I am offering Zoom based tuition to beginner, novice and established users.

Take control of your shows.

After almost 10 years of using Mainstage live across Europe, I have decided to offer tuition. Not only will live performers get the most from this incredible environment, it will be predictable and robust.
