So lovely to meet and welcome Tim Farron to the exhibition today. Tim nominated Will Clark to be a subject of the exhibition- truly a ‘good soul’.

It was great to talk about all ten subjects - Tim was so pleased to hear about amazing people, as he always is.

⭐️Meet and dabble - come along and meet Bob, award winning artist and creator of GOOD SOULS exhibition at Holker Hall and Gardens - dabble with some paints and get some tips - for FREE! Spaces limited in the GOOD SOULS exhibition area.

In the tenth and final of 10 posts to introduce the fantastic subjects of the 2025 Good Souls exhibition…

Ro and Gareth Thomas

Gareth and Ro are founders of Woodmatters, based in Cumbria. Through their woodland based work their mission is to inspire a stronger bond between individuals and the natural world.
Much of their work is environmental education and Ro and Gareth share a background in conservation, bushcraft and greenwood working.
They bring these skills together to run immersive experiences. From single day courses and school group visits to overnight camps or longer term projects.
During the winter Gareth also works as a coppice worker and they jointly run Woodshare - a community firewood scheme that enables members to work in the woodland in return for lower cost firewood and the satisfaction of connecting to one of our basic needs whilst supporting nature conservation.
They have a long connection with the National Trust’s St Catherines Estate near Windermere. Gareth worked there as their Community Education Officer and was heavily involved in the innovative strawbale Footprint building. They continue to work in close partnership with the National Trust.
They engage with people of all ages from throughout the region, aiming to evoke emotional connections and heighten awareness of our own inter-relationship with the natural world.

In the ninth of 10 posts to introduce the fantastic subjects of the 2025 Good Souls exhibition…

THE TAYLOR FAMILY
George and Emma Taylor own a farm in Crook, located just outside of Kendal.

The Taylor family has a long history of farming in this area, spanning over 120 years beginning with George’s newlywed Great Grandparents. They still own a working 1940s tractor which George’s father had to cycle to Kendal with the cash to purchase. It was only the second tractor in the area at the time.

Farming is not just a job for the Taylors, but a way of life.

They understand that solely relying on farming for their whole family income is not possible - George himself had to work at another local farm before taking over from his father. Emma also works elsewhere outside of the farm.

The same path might await George and Emma’s three sons, who share a passion for farming but also recognise the need for diverse skills and qualifications to ensure the farm’s viability in the future.

In addition to their farming responsibilities, the whole Taylor family has been actively involved in the Curlew Recovery South Lakes conservation group. This project has been successful in increasing breeding pairs and raising awareness about the endangered Curlew species. Each year, the Taylors make sacrifices by adjusting their farming practices to create a more hospitable environment for nesting birds, including setting aside land for Curlews to use.

George, Emma and their sons, work alongside fellow members of the group to dedicate significant time and effort to locating, protecting and monitoring multiple nesting sites, then following the Curlew families through to fledging.

In the eighth of 10 posts to introduce the fantastic subjects of the 2025 Good Souls exhibition…

SOLVEIG HUNT
Solveig was, until her retirement in 2024, a Staff Nurse at St Mary’s Hospice. She had worked for the charity since it opened in 1989.
Originally from Norway, Solveig didn’t consider a career as a nurse. A chance holiday job in the care of people, however, meant that she was able to understand the natural gift she had in this field.

It is this gift that defines Solveig as quite extraordinary. Her whole working life has focussed on caring for the dying and those around them, which she has done with such compassion, authenticity and kindness, making a positive difference to thousands of local families at the hardest of times.

When she first worked at St Marys, Solveig worked nights as she had a young family. Solveig is a highly skilled and intuitive listener – and can talk to anyone! She is reassuring and able to put everyone at ease. At night, patients are often awake and anxious and in these silent hours Solveig got to know and support so many wonderful and unique people from across our community.
It was Solveig’s role in the Hospice@Home Team that she loved the most. Supported by her colleagues and Christian faith, Solveig had the skills and tenacity to embrace the end-of-life nursing which she loved - alongside the challenge of never knowing what situation she was going into.

Irrespective of these challenges, Solveig knew being invited into a patient’s home is a different dynamic to entering a room on the in-patient unit. She stepped into their world, privileged to get to know so much more about the person she was caring for - the pictures on a mantlepiece, a family moving around at ease, the animals in the home.

In the seventh of 10 posts to introduce the fantastic subjects of the 2025 Good Souls exhibition…

EMILY WORMALD
Emily has been a resident of Cumbria for a decade now, having relocated for university. The transition was a learning curve, leaving behind a childhood filled with community and connections to embark on a new chapter.

When the Covid-19 pandemic struck, Emily took up gravel riding and bikepacking and discovered a newfound sense of empowerment and confidence by exploring the Lakes on her bike, becoming self-sufficient, and learning more about herself along the way.

After a few conversations with fellow cyclists, Emily realised she wasn’t the only one feeling lonely and in need of community, so she took the initiative to establish a women’s cycling group.
Fast forward four years, and the Lakes Gravel Gang has flourished, with over 650 members and approximately 8 events held each month. With 20 dedicated ride organisers, Emily now proudly observes the community she and its members have built - a supportive network centered around cycling.

In essence, Emily’s journey from loneliness to a thriving community exemplifies the transformative power of shared experiences and the bonds forged through a common passion for cycling
