Thank you to Chris Skidmore, chairman of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) for inviting us to play today to honour the lives lost in the Higham mining disaster in 1860 has been unveiled.

Higham Colliery’s explosion took place in the Silkstone Seam on its northern limit, claiming the lives of 13 men and boys in 1860, the youngest of whom was aged just 11.

A miners’ coal tub has been fixed to rails off Higham Common Road which was unveiled today

DODWORTH COLLIERY MW BRASS BAND AT THE AUCKLEY SHOW

What a fantastic afternoon for Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band at the Auckley Show today!

We were delighted to be part of this wonderful community event, performing to a very receptive audience in the main marquee. The atmosphere was fantastic; although we have to admit, it was certainly warm inside that marquee!

The band presented a varied programme, including Pulsar, Sway, Benedictus, Poker Face, Happy Together, Lady Stewart’s Air, Harry Potter, Essence of Brass, Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me, The Wellerman, Amparito Roca, Going Home, Eleanor Rigby and selections from Les Misérables.

There was also a slight change to the running order when the performer following us was delayed, meaning we brought For Your Eyes Only forward into the first half, immediately after Lady Stewart’s Air. The band adapted quickly and professionally, as always.

We are incredibly grateful for everyone who helped make today's performance possible.

Another enjoyable outing for Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band and another opportunity to share live brass music with the community.

A Very Special Award

Although Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band held our annual awards evening on Sunday 12th July, we had one very special award to keep back!

We were delighted to present the John Woffinden Memorial Shield – Inspirational Award to our Resident Conductor, Charlie Brammer.

Charlie received the award in recognition of his incredible work in restarting our Junior Band in September 2025, building a fantastic partnership with St John’s Primary School, and supporting and encouraging volunteers from the senior band to get involved in helping and inspiring our young learners.

The Junior Band has gone from strength to strength, and Charlie’s enthusiasm, commitment and encouragement have played a huge part in making that possible.

Charlie wasn’t able to join us for our annual awards evening, so we wanted to make sure this very special award was presented in front of the full band – and what better occasion than a rehearsal surrounded by the people who have helped make the Junior Band such a success.

A very well-deserved award, Charlie. Thank you for your inspiration, dedication and for helping to secure the future of Dodworth Colliery MW Brass Band.
