Some may say an unpopular opinion? 👀🐾

I hear people reciting this all the time. It sounds nice sure, but it’s not true 😅

The reality is that dogs are individuals, shaped by BOTH genetics and environment.

Poor breeding, unstable temperaments, genetic predispositions to aggression do exist.

To pretend otherwise does a disservice to both dogs and yourself.

Of course, how a dog is raised matters exposure, training, life experiences and management all play a huge role in shaping behaviour but they simply don’t (and wont) overwrite genetics.

A dog isn’t born as a blank slate waiting for an owner to determine every aspect of its personality.

Some dogs are simply dealt a more difficult hand than others. That doesn’t make them unworthy and it doesn’t mean their owners have failed.

It just means behaviour is often more complex than the average person thinks.

Normalising talking to people about how genetics matter, breeding matters, environment matters, and that dog behaviour is rarely as black and white as people want it to be.

Raising a puppy isn’t easy for many reasons! 🐶

But one of the biggest mistakes I see is expecting too much, too soon.

Puppies don’t need to walk perfectly on a lead, ignore every distraction, or behave like fully trained adult dogs. They need time to explore, learn, make mistakes, and simply be puppies.

The same goes for exercise. More isn’t better. Their bodies are still developing, and too much repetitive exercise at a young age can have lasting effects on growing joints and bones.

Slow down. Focus on building confidence, positive experiences, and a great relationship. The obedience will come but they only get one puppyhood. 🐾

“Move your back feet” is actually a very complicated request a lot of dogs 🤣

But once it clicks, everything changes 💃

Once they get their rear end engaged the benefits are endless! It builds confidence, coordination, body control and so much more 🤍🐾

Not every dog was bred to be social, neutral, calm, or easy going 🫣

Your dog most likely isn’t trying to be difficult. A lot of the time they’re simply behaving exactly how generations of breeding designed them to.

The more we understand, the better lives we can give our dogs. 🤍🐾✨

Understanding changes everything.

Your dog doesn’t measure how much you love them by how many treat they get!

They feel it in the trust, companionship, safety & the life you have together.

You’d soon gasp at an emaciated dog in the street, so why has it become such a normalised sight to see a dog at the other end of the weight spectrum?

Fat is not cute, the truth is you’re simply reducing your dogs lifespan 😟

If you would like any help or advice on your dogs weight my DM’s and emails are open 🤍🐾

The truth is … most dogs are more offended by a nail trim than a properly conditioned ecollar 😂🤍

I hear things like “I took them for a two hour walk and they’re still full of energy” that’s because sometimes burning energy simply is not enough! 🐾

Fulfilment comes from both mental and physical needs in ways that actually make sense to the dog.

1. Mental stimulation, this can look like short obedience sessions with your dog, place work, scent games, puzzles etc.

2. Breed specific fulfilment, herding style games, structured recall work for herding type breeds. Spaniels thrive with scent work and retrieving etc. If you’re unsure what your dog was originally bred for this is your sign to get out there and learn 👏🏻🙌🏻.

3. Clear structure and boundaries, so many working dogs struggle because nobody has clearly explained expectations to them. Structure help dogs feel secure and understand how to succeed in our world. 🐶

4. PURPOSEFUL exercise. We want exercise to help build that fulfilment, not just constant ball throwing and needless stimulation, doing that can actually create a dog that really struggles to switch off. However hiking, structured play & controlled games that’s going to encourage engagement with you and your dog. 🥳

5. Proper rest. If you think your dog is constantly stimulated and struggles to settle, teaching calmness crate/place training is so overlooked. Settling is a skill that creates a clear headed balanced dog that can enjoy life in and outside the house. 💕
