Shaping the Story

Following our introduction to Pandora, Rich and Jay, we’re diving deeper into their involvement in A Roaring Boy and the conversations, perspectives and experiences that have helped shape the piece.

In this video, Rich and Jay explore some of the questions at the heart of the play. Their perspectives offer a glimpse into the importance of bringing lived experience and community voices into the creative process, helping the team to question, explore and shape the story with authenticity and care.

A Roaring Boy looks back to Shakespeare’s world, but asks questions that continue to resonate today about identity, belonging, self-expression and the freedom to be yourself.

Meet Pandora, Rich and Jay ...

As A Roaring Boy developed, writers Ant and Jack listened and worked with members of the trans and LGBTQ+ community, ensuring that the play’s exploration of identity and self-expression is grounded in authenticity, lived experience and contemporary perspectives.

That’s where Pandora Rich and Jay, have played an important role.
Working alongside the creative team, Pandora, Rich and Jay have brought their own knowledge, experience and critical perspectives to the writing process, helping to question, challenge and shape the story as it has evolved.

Their contribution has been an important part of creating a play that looks back to Shakespeare’s world while asking questions that continue to resonate today.

Next week, we’ll be hearing more from Pandora and Jay about their work on A Roaring Boy, what they brought to the process, and why authentic representation matters when telling stories about identity, history and self-expression.

SHAKESPEARE, IDENTITY & THE STAGE

Shakespeare’s stage was a place of transformation.

Gender, identity and self-expression were constantly being played with, challenged and reimagined. Characters crossed boundaries, identities shifted, and performers inhabited roles beyond the expectations of everyday life.

A Roaring Boy takes inspiration from that world to ask a very contemporary question: how do those historical realities resonate with the ways we understand identity and self-expression today?

In this video, writer Jack and director Ant explore the connections between Shakespeare’s theatre and the questions that still surround identity, performance and the freedom to define who we are.

Because perhaps the distance between Shakespeare’s stage and ours isn’t quite as great as we think.

Young male actors played female roles, creating a fascinating world where gender and performance were deeply intertwined.

A Roaring Boy begins at the heart of this theatrical tradition.

🪶 In Shakespeare's time:
🎭 Acting was an exclusively male profession.
🎭 Boy players were aged 10 to 18 and performed all female roles
🎭 Older boys played leads, like Juliet and Cleopatra, alongside all-male adult troupes like the King's Men.

🥇Famous Boy Players: Nathan Field, Edward Kynaston, and Robert Gough were celebrities of their day, famous for their convincing portrayals of
women.
