As Spiderflower transits its 20th year and while I'm digging through / surrounded by memorabilia, I want to spin out a trip down memory lane and share the most important moments of Spiderflower's story. I think it makes an interesting one.
Re-membering is such an important part of reaching milestones.
Some people have lost touch, others still friends, some so sadly no longer with us. In this year it is my intent to remember them all.
This is The Kokopelli Co in action and tracks back a couple of years before Spiderflower actually took form, but is I would say the very beginning.
Lusmore's Hump was a dynamic piece of theatre with some beautiful ensemble work. It dealt very simply with the conflict between human relationship to the environment through the Legend of Knockgrafton.
There is a sharp edge looking back at this with the knowledge we have today about that same relationship. I remember then I had huge hope. I would have never imagined to be in the position we are in today with governments and politicians remaining dangerously inactive in the face of such crisis. It simply did not enter my head it could be so. Today, it is time to take stock of that.
During this run, someone. . . (and to this day I still do not know who), left the most incredible gift for the cast. We returned one morning to the woods before a performance to find the performance space (or duck pond) adorned with 100's of feathers. 100's of them. To this day - thank you. It was so touching and must have taken - forever!
The greatest thanks to the dear folks of this era: Carl Simpson, Deborah Hood, Tina Ling, Catherine Fenton, Nick Whittingham, Laughing of the Drum, Maddy Morton, Ruth Adams, Candy Bowman + Dominic Knutton.

In the middle of Highgate Woods. . . it all began in a duck pond.
The seed for the performance process, movement form and all Spiderflower is today was set.
The Company ran from 1996 - 1997 with Lusmore's Hump, followed by The Moon Pool.
The first production of Lusmore's Hump delighted and spellbound audiences aged from 0 - 80 years.
