Here’s a whistle stop tour of our 2 day trip to Helensburgh. It was lots of fun. Keep your eye out for a blog coming soon.

Thanks to everyone we met for making Alex, Casper and I feel so welcome. Your kindness made our stay extra special.

A big welcome to blogger Scotland with The Wee White Dug, who is visiting Helensburgh and Lomond to explore the amazing things our destination has to offer this Spring.

Yesterday Sam, Alex and Casper visited Tweedie, The Beachcomber, You & Sea, Riva Hotel, and Sugar Boat. Read all about it here.

We’re spending a couple of days in Helensburgh and day one has been fantastic.

After arriving in town we enjoyed a walk along the promenade, before visiting the town’s Outdoor Museum on Colquhoun Square. It covered lots of interesting information about the Firth of Clyde town - which was the birthplace of John Logie Baird. Spring is the perfect time of year to visit Helensburgh as it’s when the cherry blossom trees bloom and if you love cherry blossom trees you’ll ADORE Helensburgh.

After our walk we popped into one of the town’s fab independent shops. Tweedie is a tweed lovers dream. They cater for dogs and humans and have a beautiful range for items for sale. They design the tweed in house, so it’s unique. All items are handcrafted too and are quality pieces and that’ll last a lifetime. The boy got a new collar, bow tie and neckerchief and I got a pretty hairband.

After exploring the promenade and town centre it was time for lunch by the sea. The Beachcomber is a nautical themed seaside cafe. It’s dog friendly, human friendly and the food is delicious. We had ice cream floats, homemade soup and sandwiches which set us up nicely for an afternoon at sea.

Family owned You & Sea operate dog friendly boat tours from Rhu Marina which is a stone’s thrown from Helensburgh town centre. Their tours are a brilliant way to see Helensburgh and the surrounding Firth of Clyde towns from a whole new perspective. We love boats, so were in our element bobbing about on the water for a couple or hours. We got an amazing close up view of some seals lazing on a sandbank. The highlight for me was sailing round the hulking wreck of MV Captayannis aka Sugar Boat. The ship was carrying a cargo of sugar when it got into trouble just off the coast of Helensburgh in January 1974. It toppled onto its side and still lies where it floundered - half in and half out of the water.

After our boat trip it was time to check into our hotel. Riva Helensburgh Riva BoutiqueHotel is a four star boutique hotel with sea views. It’s cool, quirky and chilled. Our room is amazing - super stylish and comfy. We can see Sugar Boat from it. The best thing about it though is the record player and selection of vintage records you can play.

After relaxing in our room for a while it was time for dinner. Back on Colquhoun Square we had a table booked at hip eatery Sugar Boat. The restaurant wouldn’t look out of place in London, Paris or New York. It has a cool loft style, industrial vibe, which I loved. The food was way up there with the best we’ve eaten on our travels. Simple, unpretentious and full of flavour. Sugar Boat has a kitchenware and wine shop too, which I couldn’t resist visiting. They describe the shop as containing “nothing you need, but everything you want” and they’re not wrong. I wanted (didn’t need) a New York pizza plate for my new kitchen. After leaving with said pizza plate, I know the cup and saucer set I also don’t need but want will lure me back into Sugar Boat before we head home.

I can’t wait to see what tomorrow has in store for us.

Stay tuned to find out.

Back in May 2021, the public were asked to take part in a survey to help a team of designers identify a new and improved walking, cycling and wheeling route from Helensburgh to Garelochhead.

You can now view the designs and submit comments, questions and suggestions at www.helensburgh-garelochhead.info. The team would really appreciate your insights into what is needed to create a safe and enjoyable experience for travellers of the route. The route aims to better connect local amenities and reduce the area's carbon footprint by encouraging greener travel between them.

Meet the design team in person on Thursday, 9th September 2021!

They will be holding a Route Relay, which will see the team cycle the existing 7.7 mile route from Helensburgh to Garelochhead, stopping throughout the day at key locations.

You are invited to come along to these key locations at the times indicated, to chat with the design team about the project and the proposals The Perch Garelochhead, The Beachcomber, Helensburgh Cycles.
More information can be found on the website. Come along if you can!
As it’s National Dog Day here is a list of some of our dog-friendly cafes in the Helensburgh and Lomond District area.
