As we reach the end of National Tree Week 2025 it seems like a good time to let you all know what FOBC are up to.
With the illegal felling of the iconic tree at Sycamore Gap on Hadrian's Wall in September 2023, the twin sycamores at Top Withens may well be considered to be some of the most important trees in the UK landscape. We were surprised to discover that the sycamores don't enjoy any legal protection, so we approached Bradford Council to ask whether Tree Preservation Orders could be placed on them.
The trees team at CBMDC are keen to protect the Top Withens sycamores, and the process towards obtaining TPOs has started. A little further down the line, the public will be given the opportunity to comment on the proposed orders, and we will make sure that you know when that happens. Of course, a TPO would not have protected the Sycamore Gap tree from being felled, and nor would if protect our sycamores at Top Withens from the same fate - but we think it is worth obtaining.
There's much more in the pipeline about protecting Top Withens and the surrounding landscape, and we'll keep you posted.
Thanks for your support!
