📖 Sophie De-Roe has published a well researched handbook to underwater portraiture.

It's now online and ready to view and purchase from Amazon:

Underwater portraiture is one of the most striking - and misunderstood - areas of photography. Beautiful, unpredictable, and technically demanding, it sits at the intersection of art, science, and safety.

In this practical and honest guide, underwater portrait photographer Sophie De-Roe draws on over a decade of experience to demystify the process and make this unique discipline more accessible.

From breathwork and buoyancy to lighting, equipment, and editing, this book breaks down the core principles that underpin successful underwater images - without gatekeeping or unnecessary jargon. It also addresses the realities often left unsaid: the costs, the risks, the common mistakes, and how to avoid wasting time and money learning the hard way.

* St Leonards, Saturday Photo Walk with Jon Allen & Kodak *

5 days to book your place!

Not far off your LAST CHANCE to get tickets for Jon's film photo walk in St Leonards on Saturday June 27th with Analogue Wonderland.
It starts at 2pm on the seafront and finishes at 5pm with a meet up with the Hastings group, somewhere near the pier.

There are three ticket types available: £10 gets you a spot on the walk. £20 gets you a roll of film and development (which is cheaper than they would cost separately). £40 gets you a simple point and shoot camera as well (or, if you ask me nicely, I can lend you one of my random collection of cameras!).

Ticket link - available until Sunday June 14th.

Exhibition openings this Friday and Saturday - All welcome!

''Introducing my upcoming solo exhibition - "...and other stories..."

On throughout February at the Stables Theatre Art Gallery, The Bourne, Old Town Hastings.
A big thank you to gallery custodian for the opportunity.

If every picture tells a story, what is the story or narrative behind these photographs?
Presenting 12 with an 'unreliable' narrative.
A whole month to pop down for a look and make up your own mind what stories the images suggest - just don't be swayed by by interpretations!
And an invite to write your own.''

Exhibition is free and open from 2-Feb - 28-Feb.
Meet me, the artist, Saturday 7-Feb 11am-1pm.

Liquid Assets & Unseen
By Sophie De-Roe

''From 4th February, I will be exhibiting Liquid Assets and Unseen in a month-long solo exhibition at Cake Room on Robertson Street in Hastings.

I’m anticipating a strong response to the show, given the café’s well-earned reputation for showcasing high-quality work by local artists, and I’d like to extend a sincere thank you to Caroline for offering me the slot.

This exhibition feels like a meaningful way to begin 2026. It will be my first solo show outside of Photo Hastings, and being invited to exhibit in such a beautiful, thoughtfully curated space is genuinely an honour. That said, it also feels like a perfect fit.''
