Our review of Calendar Girls at Farnham Maltings (17-20 June).
"Funny, Fearless and Heartfelt"

If you feel like a trip out of the area but the rolling hills of Yorkshire are a touch too far, then you might consider a visit to Farnham where for the next few days a little of the dales and their countryfolk have been brought to us in the form of the hilarious and heartwarming musical ๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ณ ๐˜Ž๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ญ๐˜ด.

The story follows a group of Women's Institute members who take a break from their usual church themed calendar to raise funds with nudes for each month of the year - replete with strategically positioned teapots, cakes and whatever else is at hand. The funds are being raised for a new settee for the local hospital, a cause close to the hearts of the women and especially friends Annie and Chris.

The musical is extremely funny and this current production in Farnham is propelled by a strong and talented cast who bring great personality and character in each and every role. In between the laughs are a series of brilliantly sung and performed musical numbers, supported by a live band.

The show builds towards the moment when the main characters pose for the calendar and it's a wonderfully realised moment of theatre; the actors living for real the vulnerable and fearless experience of the real-life women upon whose experiences the story is based. The audience feels this too, creating one of those rare theatrical moments where an entire room seems united in the same emotion.

We were also impressed with some clever staging ideas which we won't spoil, and great lighting.

Running at Haslemere Hall from 18โ€“20 June, ๐˜‘๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ ๐˜ˆ๐˜ฃ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ ๐˜๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ˆ๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฏ is one of the funniest shows weโ€™ve had the pleasure to see. From the people behind last year's superb ๐˜๐˜ฎ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ and the wildly-popular annual pantomimes, this is a company that knows its strength lies in the character and comedy skills of its talented cast.

Based on characters from Sheridan's classic ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜™๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ด and written by Richard Bean (๐˜–๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ฏ, ๐˜›๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ ๐˜Ž๐˜ถ๐˜ท๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ด), the action takes place during the summer of 1940. Pilot Officer Jack Absolute returns to RAF Fontwell after an aerial dogfight to discover that Lydia Languish, the woman he once loved, has unexpectedly arrived on the base. Determined to win her back, Jack launches a campaign of romantic manoeuvres โ€“ mirroring the messy dogfights in the air - that quickly spiral into confusion, misunderstanding and outright chaos.

The show revels in its variety of its comedy. Mrs Malaprop's wonderfully mangled language delivers a constant stream of wordplay, while Jack's increasingly elaborate schemes generate layers of farce and mistaken identity. Elsewhere, nervous romantics, overconfident pilots, mischievous servants and eccentric authority figures all contribute their own unique flavour of humour.

Then thereโ€™s slapstick, character comedy, visual gags, callback, funny costumes, verbal misunderstandings, audience interaction and enough comic confusion to keep the whole thing airborne for two hours!

Yet the play is more than a collection of punchlines. Beneath the laughter lies a surprisingly warm story about friendship, love and the peculiar circumstances that arise when people from very different backgrounds find themselves thrown together during wartime โ€“ as Sir Anthony puts it โ€˜War throws the classes togetherโ€™.

The production also makes ambitious use of Haslemere Hall itself. Rather than confining the action to the stage, the company spreads across a vast playing area incorporating much of the hall floor. The result is a production that feels both intimate and epic at the same time, drawing the audience into the action while giving the performers plenty of room for the larger-than-life comic set pieces that the script demands.

Most importantly, however, ๐˜‘๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ ๐˜ˆ๐˜ฃ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ ๐˜๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ˆ๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฏ never forgets its primary mission: to entertain.

Whether it's discussions about shooting down the wrong aeroplanes, stomach-challenging debates about the nature of true love, patriotic devotion to decorative bunting, or one unforgettable comic moment involving livestock in a basket, the show consistently finds new ways to surprise its audience.

If you enjoy sharp wordplay, larger-than-life characters and fast-moving farce, ๐˜‘๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ ๐˜ˆ๐˜ฃ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ ๐˜๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ˆ๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฏ should be high on your list this week.

๐˜‘๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ ๐˜ˆ๐˜ฃ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ ๐˜๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ˆ๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฏ runs at Haslemere Hall from 18โ€“20 June.

OUR REVIEW IS IN!!! 'Classic Musical, Wonderfully Staged'

Under the assured direction of Helen Parrdew, this world-famous musical was a joy to behold. We all know the story โ€” a girl from Kansas swept away by a flying house into a fantastical land where the only road home lies through friendship, courage, and a wizard who may be more talk than talent โ€” but Grayshott Stagers brought it to life with warmth, humour, and heart.

The four central characters are so iconic, and all four performers were perfectly suited to the roles they were playing. Anouk Zschaler was impeccable as Dorothy, Tony Carpenter brought sweetness and humour to the Scarecrow, Richard Ashton was strong, reliable and believable as the Tin Man, and Philip Hutchinson was a note-perfect cowardly Lion. Hazel Parrdew played a commanding Wicked Witch, while Clemency Bray was perfectly sweet as the Good Witch.

There were characters not included in the famous film version, along with some extra songs โ€” and who doesnโ€™t love a song? The live band of four, led by the assured musical director Kate Buxton, used the dramatic score to great effect throughout and really helped set the scene. All the singing was on point and we found ourselves tapping our feet throughout the evening.

It was wonderful to see a cast of all ages, from primary school children to much more mature performers, all working together so successfully. The different age groups were mixed throughout the production, giving everyone plenty to get their teeth into, particularly in the many marvellous big ensemble numbers.

The junior cast wrote in the programme notes about which parts they most enjoyed, and unsurprisingly many picked the dancing scenes โ€” a real credit to choreographer Robyn Davies. We especially loved the dancing bugs with their beautiful wings.

The staging, under Stage Manager Clare Nisbet, was slick, inventive and original throughout. We loved the way the house in the hurricane was achieved โ€” simple but inspired โ€” as well as the clever yellow brick road effect. The Wizard himself was beautifully staged and must have taken hours of work to create.

The costumes continued the Grayshott Stagersโ€™ high standards. Led by Mary Coyte and her many helpers, they paid loving homage to the iconic film designs โ€” and theyโ€™re iconic for a reason.
