What We Do
Small Brown Dog has been providing services to the folk industry, and more general arts clients, since 2008. Now based in Hartlepool and recently established as a Community Interest Company directed by Joan Crump and Jonny Mohun, Small Brown Dog is developing new community projects and initiatives in the North East. It also supports innovative independent artists with career progression, especially around project development and fundraising. Recent successful bid-writing has included Hannah James’ first solo project, JigDoll, jigdoll.co.uk (Arts Council England) and Rowan Rheingans’ Edinburgh Fringe First Award-winning show, Dispatches on the Red Dress https://rowanrheingans.co.uk/dispatches-on-the-red-dress (Arts Council England, PRSF Women Make Music). We are currently working with several new clients to develop music projects, both in the North East and nationwide.
Recent stage/event management clients have included the National Trust-funded Easington Miners’ Picnic (https://tinyurl.com/tvyvuxs) and Topic Records’ 80th Anniversary at the Barbican in London (80th-anniversary-at-the-barbican-0cks6qf9q). Small Brown Dog launched Hartlepool Folk Festival in 2015, and continues to produce this annual event which combines the best of tradition with innovation, originality and a powerful sense of place.
In addition to her work with Small Brown Dog, Joan is a freelance Project Coordinator for The Creative Seed CIC, focusing on fundraising, development and programming for the organisation’s gorgeous new arts space at St Hilda’s Parish Centre in Southwick, Sunderland. She is also an AQA Assessor for Arts Council England. Jonny is a professional musician and arranger, as well as the Musical Director for Hartlepool Folk Festival’s annual commissioned projects, which have featured the likes of Martin and Eliza Carthy, Jon Boden, Vin Garbutt, Dick Gaughan and John Hegley.
