The Play's the Thing A showcase of new drama by emerging playwrights on The Play's the Thing playwriting workshop facilitated by Conor Montague at the ICC Theatre, Hammersmith

18/09/2026

Would you kill for your best friend?

New Irish play COUNTING SWANS is a darkly funny and deeply moving story about friendship, grief, hurling and the choices we make when there are no easy answers.

🎭 Written and performed by Conor Montague and Kieran Kelliher.

Conor Montague’s tightly crafted drama sets a benchmark in creating stimulating, almost filmic drama for the stage. – Paul Vale (The Stage, UK)

You have been waiting for this.
The Scripts 2026 programme is now live, and tickets are on sale for four days of new Irish theatre, workshops and conversations in Birr, Co Offaly, this July.

This year's theme is Desire. From the moment the open call went live, the response told us something: the desire to write, to be heard, to see new work on a real stage, is as fierce as ever. 183 playwrights from ten countries answered the call. Three of them will have their new plays performed at Birr Theatre & Arts Centre on Sunday 5 July. But Scripts is also a new play everyday and some brilliant workshops and discussions about everything theatre.

See the full programme and book your tickets at www.scriptsireland.com or call 057 9122911.

(Scripts Scholar passes give you access to everything across all four days, including a live mentoring session with Eugene O'Brien. Only 12 available.)

"The desire to write grows with writing." so said Erasmus a long time ago.
No matter when it was said, it's a firm reminder that creativity is a journey, not a destination. Every word you write fuels the next, the more you do, the more you'll get done and, before you know it, you’ve crafted something incredible that you can submit for this year's competition!

Our competition is your chance to explore Desire in all its forms.
What will your play reveal?

📢 Playwrights, your time is now! 📢
Only 4 weeks left to submit your short play for our competition on the theme of Desire. Whether it’s love, ambition, or rebellion, we want to see how you bring this powerful emotion to life on stage.

📝 Requirements:
Under 15 minutes
