The Bacchae are an all female company producing classical theatre. Taking our inspiration from Euripedes' play of the same name, we focus on resurrecting classical pieces from Greek tragedies all the way up to Victorian farces. Set up by Samantha in 1998 with the idea of bringing classical theatre into modern settings, starting with ‘The Frogs’ by Euripides performed at The Merton Abbey Mills Band
stand South London as part of the Merton Fringe Festival. Since then Samantha moved to rural Surrey and continued (intermittently) whilst running a theatre school and having children. Over the years, the Bacchae have performed around the South East of England, including bringing shows to the Guildford Fringe Festival. During the lockdown, our current lineup was formed, and the company has worked hard remotely to put together two shows (The Area Belle and Duel in the Dark) for performances in Summer 2021.
