Scottish fiddler Ryan Young has performed at our gigs in Farnham and Guildford for the past few years and it's so exciting to see him realising his musical dreams - not only performing with Martin Hayes but making an album with him as producer! Ryan will be bringing his trio, featuring Louis Campbell and Stuart McCallum, to Farnham Maltings on 20 November. We can't wait!!

My biggest musical dream has always been to one day maybe play on stage with my hero Martin Hayes. I of course never thought there was even a small chance that this would happen. But it actually did this weekend when he invited me to perform at Masters of Tradition in Bantry with the amazing Stuart McCallum. I don’t know what to say 🥹🎻🇮🇪

Gig Alert! Ryan Young will be coming to Farnham for his third Folk Inspiration concert, along with an outstanding line-up of musicians!!

Ryan Young is a Scottish fiddle player working within the traditional music of Scotland. His playing is noted for its distinctive tone and phrasing, with an approach that places melody and expression at the centre of the music. His debut album was produced by four-time GRAMMY winner Jesse Lewis, and Ryan has since toured extensively across the UK, Europe, North America and Australia.

Ryan has received multiple awards and nominations. In 2025, he was named Musician of the Year at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards. His latest album, produced by and featuring Martin Hayes (The Gloaming, Martin Hayes and the Common Ground Ensemble), introduces a range of collaborators and expands his musical scope.

In this concert performance, Ryan is joined by guitarists Louis Campbell (Sam Lee, Sam Sweeney) and Stuart McCallum (The Breath, Cinematic Orchestra), bringing a broader palette of sound and texture.

Acoustic guitarist Sandy Stanage (Pauline Alexander, Kentigern, Molendinar) will open the concert. “His playing is understated to the point of perfection.” - FATEA

Meet our tutors
John Dipper (fiddle, viola d'amore, concertina): performer, composer, teacher and instrument maker. John is a consummate musician (Dipper Malkin, Paterson Dipper, Alma, English Acoustic Collective) and a much sought after tutor at academic institutions and folk festivals (Halsway Manor, Sidmouth, Historically Informed Summer School). His unique playing style and compositions convey a deep understanding and passion for indigenous culture. Three of the albums John recently recorded and performed on have been in The Times Top 10 Folk/Roots albums of the year.

For everyone who came to our Topette !!Summer Bal back in June, isn't it rather lovely to know that Worplesdon Memorial Hall provided the backdrop for the band's new photos with Archie Churchill-Moss? We're really excited for this new line-up and could not wait to hear and to dance to our fave dance band again!

We have an EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT! From the start of 2027, our wonderful accordionist Andy Cutting will be passing on the box-playing baton to Archie Churchill-Moss. We're delighted that he has agreed to take up the challenge, and we're looking forward to new musical adventures with this talented and lovely young man.

To kick things off, Halsway Manor Centre for Folk Arts have just put tickets on sale for a Workshop Weekend with Topette!! which will form the conclusion of next year's summer tour. Jump on board if you're interested, as the places may well sell-out quickly...

Meet our tutors
Dave Malkin (guitar, voice): composer, guitarist, producer working predominantly in music for film and TV. His recent credits include additional music for Tucci In Italy (Disney+) and orchestration of Hannah Peel’s score for the feature documentary Underland, a film inspired by Robert Macfarlane’s book of the same name. Dave’s collaboration with John Dipper as the duo Dipper Malkin has been universally admired - their debut album was included in The Sunday Times “Best 100 Albums of 2017” and their forthcoming album "Music From Nowhere" will be released in January 2027.
