Early this morning I was cutting out solfa hand signs for choir when a message came through to one of our Gower Harmony WhatsApp groups. Someone was looking for more information about a song we're learning about the Tequila bat, the agave flowers and the Jimadores of Mexico. He was unable to find any information online.
So I read what the composer had to say about the song and got fascinated to find out more about the Tequila Bat. The song book Epic Journeys by Sheila Macbeth was published in 2017 when the Tequila Bat was critically endangered, but I discovered that thanks to work by a conservationist nicknamed 'The Bat Man of Mexico' and thousands of agave farmers who he persuaded to change their practices and leave some agave to flower, the bats are now off the endangered list.
I love that there was space in my morning to follow this thread and it put me in mind of Polly Bolton's song Never Doubt, inspired by the words of Margaret Mead:
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world - indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." So now we are singing that too š
